    The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its eleventh session in Marrakech, Morocco, from 1 to 5 December 2008. The session was attended by delegates from 18 Members of the Commission. The session appraised the achievements by its subsidiary bodies, the activities of the regional projects to support GFCM as well as the outcome of the Coordinating Meeting of the Sub-Committees (CMSC). It acknowledged the progress to impr ove the stock assessment process notably through undertaking joint stock assessment of hake (Merluccius merluccius) and small pelagic species and harmonizing protocols to undertake surveys at sea. The Committee took note of progress achieved in the framework of data collection and processing through Task 1 and STATLANT 37A form. It also noted the progress made on issues such as GFCM logbook and promoting activities and knowledge on the ecosystem approach to fisheries, recreational fish eries, gear selectivity and bycatch. SAC further reviewed fishery management proposals emanating from its Sub-Committees and formulated related advice with regard to: i) management of demersal and small pelagic fisheries; ii) implementation of the 40-mm square mesh; iii) establishment of a new fisheries restricted area in the Golf of Lions; iv) establishment of a Regional fleet register. It also suggested to amend some GFCM decisions, gave guidance regarding the activities of the Joint GFCM/ICCAT [International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas] Working Group on Large Pelagic Species and endorsed suggestions concerning the update of the SAC glossary and the priority species list, and identified actions to address the issue of monitoring the fishing capacity. The Committee agreed upon its workplan for 2009.

    The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its thirteenth session in Marseille, France, from 7 to 11 February 2011. The session was attended by delegates from 21 Members of the Commission as well as observers from intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations together with the Russian Federation. The session appraised the achievements of its subsidiary bodies along with the outcome of the Coordinating Meeting of the Sub-Committees (CMSC). The Committee reviewed the topics addressed by the 17 technical meetings held by its subsidiary bodies. These included proposals for fishery management measures, research programmes, data collection schemes and development of Management Plans. It discussed several other technical issues connected to the exploitation of red coral and European eel, the status of elasmobranchs, the protection of seabirds, turtles and monk seals as well as the monitoring of the by-catc h in the Mediterranean fisheries. The SAC further commented on the outputs of the workshop on algal and jellyfish blooms which provided options to tackle the problems posed by this phenomenon on fisheries and also gave due importance to the results of the workshops on recreational fisheries and on fishing gear selectivity. Definitions of some socio-economic parameters within the Task 1 data collection framework were reviewed and options for the improvement of the collection and submission of bio logical data under this framework were considered. The Committee acknowledged the progress made in undertaking joint stock assessments of several demersal and small pelagic species and identified a way of progression of the use of Biological Reference Points. The SAC also reviewed the progress made on the development and management of GFCM databases, including the new Biological Parameters Database and the newly released e-Glossary, as well as that made on the issue of catch weight thresholds in logbook reporting. Finally, the Committee proposed the establishment of a new Working Group to specifically address the Black Sea issues and agreed upon its workplan for 2011.

    The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its tenth session in Nicosia, Cyprus, from 22 to 26 October 2007. It was attended by delegates from 14 Members of the Commission. The Committee appraised the activities of its subsidiary bodies and those of the regional projects supporting the Commission as well as the outcome of the Coordinating Meeting of the Sub-Committees (CMSC). It acknowledged the progress in strengthening the stoc k assessment process notably through promoting joint assessment practice as well as the definition and identification of criteria for the priority species and shared stocks. It favoured the trend for the use of the data from trawl survey and requested to pay special attention to the hake (Merluccius merluccius) and associated species in 2008. SAC reviewed fishery management proposals emanating from its Sub-Committees and formulated related advice. The Committee took note of progress achieved wit h regard to defining Fisheries restricted Area and the promotion of activities on EAF and MPAs. The Committee emphasized the need to implement catch and effort data reporting in the frame of Resolution GFCM/31/2007/1 on Task 1 statistical matrix. The SAC established ad hoc Working Groups on recreational fisheries and on trawl selectivity and gave guidance regarding the activities of the Joint GFCM/International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) Working Group on Large Pel agic Species. The Committee agreed upon its workplan for 2008. It elected its new bureau.
