Synopsis (short abstract) The Organizing Committee of the International Conference on the Contribution of Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management: The Way Forward (CICI-2003) formed by the Instituto Nacional de Bosques of Guatemala, FAO, ITTO, US Department of State, US Forest Service and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Finland, would like to extend its sincere appreciation to the Government of Guatemala, including the Ministry of Agriculture and the national Immigration and Foreign Affairs au thorities, for their active contribution to the organization of the International Conference that lead to its success. Appreciation is also extended to the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the Conference, Chairpersons and Rapporteurs of the Working Groups, the Keynote speaker, and the authors and presenters of the background papers and case studies. Throughout the planning period of CICI-2003, a great number of useful and constructive suggestions were received from the members of the Inte rnational Advisory Committee of CICI-2003 and from other experts of various countries and organizations. The success of this meeting could not have been possible without such support. It is hoped that the results of this Conference will serve to enhance the development, implementation and use of criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management as tools for monitoring, assessment and reporting on forest conditions and trends by countries, as well as for influencing national policies an d practices and international cooperation and collaboration in pursuing sustainable forest management - the forest sector's contribution to sustainable development.

    FAO/ITTO Expert Consultation on Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management 2004

    The Expert Consultation on Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management (ECCI-2004) was organized by the Forest Management Bureau of the Philippines, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the International Tropical Timber Organization and convened in Cebu City, Philippines, from 2 to 4 March 2004. The Forest Management Bureau of the Philippines hosted the meeting. The Expert Consultation brought together 45 technical and policy experts representing 27 count ries and seven international organizations involved in the ongoing processes on criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management. It aimed to make recommendations for consideration by countries, C&I processes, UNFF and other international bodies and organizations involved in the work on C&I on the following issues, which served as objectives of the meeting: (1) developing a communication network among processes, countries and other relevant partners to provide a mechanism for exchange o f information, building on existing networks; (2) improving common understanding of concepts, terms and definitions related to criteria and indicators; (3) identifying common approaches, methods and protocols for collecting, storing and sharing data; (4) strengthening criteria and indicator processes and inter-process cooperation and sharing of information and know-how; and (5) analyzing the merits of forming an ad hoc international technical advisory group to address technical issues related to the development and implementation of criteria and indicators.

    A compilation of background papers for the 30 November to 3 December 1999 conference, which was organized in the Indian city of Bhopal by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the UN Environment Programme, the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service and the Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM). Besides the presentations by experts from FAO, ITTO, IIFM and the Chinese Academy of Forestry, th e publication includes summaries of sustainable forest management programmes in Bhutan, China, India, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The meeting was held to follow up on the recommendation by the seventeenth session of the Asia Pacific Forestry Commission (APFC) in 1998 to promote better understanding of forest management-evaluation criteria and indicators as a highly useful tool for the sustainable use of the region's forests.

    A report of the proceedings of the workshop, which was organized in Bhopal, India from 30 November to 3 December 1999, by FAO, UNEP (UN Environment Programme), ITTO (International Tropical Timber Organization), USDA/FS (United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service) and IIFM (Indian Institute of Forest Management). The main participants were representatives of forestry agencies from nine Asian countries with dry forests - Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri L anka and Thailand. Besides a summary of the discussions and recommendations, the publication lists the eight national-level criteria agreed on at the meeting. The meeting was held to follow up on the recommendation by the 17th session of the Asia Pacific Forestry Commission (APFC) in 1998 to promote better understanding of forest management-evaluation criteria and indicators as a highly useful tool for the sustainable use of the region's forests.

This volume in its present form, represents the systematic card-index, by subject of the Brussels Decimal Classification, in French and English, and it's supplemented by the general alphabetical index of authors.
