    Report of the proceedings of the 6 to 9 December 2000 meeting of education experts from Bangladesh, China, Maldives, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam, which was held in Bangkok, Thailand to examine how distance learning resources can be used to correct gender imbalances in rural development. Access to knowledge and information is crucial for improving the social and economic status of not just women and girls but of entire rural communities in Asia. One of the most effective ways of ensuring such access is through a partnership between agricultural education and distance learning systems, which have generally not worked in tandem in countries in the region. While the former has targeted rural areas and farmers, the latter has been focussed on urban learners. The publication includes case studies on the subject from the above countries as well as papers presented by resource persons invited to the consultation.

    This promising practice fact sheet documents a new distance learning initiative in Somalia through radio launched in 2020 by FAO as a response to public health threats posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, complementing cash+ activities and replacing face-to-face beneficiary trainings. Through this initiative, FAO sought to continue developing rural communities’ capacities to mitigate shocks, especially those compounded by the COVID-19 crisis, and disseminate context-specific behaviour change messages on nutrition and healthy diets. In 2021, the scope of the training was expanded to include long-term agriculture development programmes and social protection activities through village savings and loans associations.
