The earthquakes that struck southern Türkiye and the northern part of the Syrian Arab Republic on 6 February 2023 caused immense damages and losses, particularly in the countries’ rural areas. As a result, food consumption gaps have grown among the most vulnerable people. Given the already dire situation in the Syrian Arab Republic and the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on Türkiye, there is an urgent need to minimize the suffering and uncertainty among already vulnerable communities. Thanks to contributions from the Governments of Belgium, Norway and Sweden, through SFERA, FAO expanded its support to earthquake‑affected communities in the two countries by providing critical agricultural livelihoods assistance to address both immediate needs as well as longer term effects of the earthquake.

On 3 November 2023, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, resulting in the loss of lives and property and causing extensive damage to the agriculture sector, the source of livelihoods for many of the affected households. These losses are expected to have both an immediate and long-term impact on the affected households, many of whom were already facing moderate or severe food insecurity prior to the earthquake. In the wake of these devastating impacts, the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000 to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities, to provide agricultural production inputs to 1 400 earthquake-affected households (7 700 people). This document provides a brief description of the situation, impact on agricultural livelihoods and planned interventions aimed at helping the targeted households resume food production and restore their livelihoods.

Uganda is a disaster-prone country affected by various types of hazards, with a 16 out of 191 countries ranking in terms of risk, driven by the increasing frequency, intensity and scale of disasters affecting the country. Flooding is among the top hazards, followed by droughts, epidemics and earthquakes. To reduce the impacts of the expected disaster, the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 1 million to FAO to implement immediate anticipatory actions to prepare the communities at risk to cope with the flooding and to enable fast recovery.
