    This final evaluation (FE) of the Improved Global Governance for Hunger Reduction Programme (IGGHRP) fulfils two main purposes: (i) to ensure accountability towards the Programme Steering Committee and partners, and (ii) to share lessons learned for future EU/FAO/WFP/IFAD collaboration, FAO Strategic Planning and the diverse actors involved with the current programme. The programme was developed building on key lessons learned from previous and ongoing initiatives related to food security and n utrition, many of which were funded by the EU1. One main motivation on the part of the stakeholders was to move from a range of discrete projects to one larger and more strategic global programme aiming at improving food security and nutrition. The programme was to be embedded into FAO Strategic Framework, encouraging interdisciplinary work between divisions and strengthening linkages between FAO’s normative and operational work. This would allow for greater collaboration among the Rome-based ag encies and provide a platform for mainstreaming key cross-cutting issues such as gender and nutrition. The specific objective of the programme, in line with EU priorities and the FAO revised Strategic Framework (2010-2019)2, is “better coordinated and informed food security and nutrition governance at global, regional and national levels”. It is delivered through four interdependent Outcomes: • Outcome 1: Strengthen CFS functioning in accordance with its renewed mandate; • Outcome 2: Improve met hods, capacities and coordination for better information on food security and nutrition for decision-making • Outcome 3: Improve guidance, capacities and coordination for food security and nutrition policy and programme design and implementation • Outcome 4: Strengthen human and organizational capacities in the food security and nutrition domain

    This report is the final evaluation of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation’s (FAO’s) Global Programme for “Supporting Implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests” (PGM/MUL/2012-2016/VG), also referred to as the VGGT Programme. The VGGT1 provide countries with a framework for best practices in tenure-related policies, laws, regulations, strategies and practices. The VGGT were endorsed in May 2012 during the 38th (special) session of the Committee on Food Security, following a large-scale consultation process. This evaluation was conducted between October 2016 and July 2017. For the collection of primary data, the evaluation focused on the following VGGT countries, selected in consultation with the programme management team: Mongolia, Myanmar, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Uganda. One-week missions were conducted in each country.

    As the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity 2011–2020 comes to a close and countries prepare to adopt a post-2020 global biodiversity framework, this edition of The State of the World’s Forests (SOFO) examines the contributions of forests, and of the people who use and manage them, to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Forests cover just over 30 percent of the global land area, yet they provide habitat for the vast majority of the terrestrial plant and animal species known to science. Unfortunately, forests and the biodiversity they contain continue to be under threat from actions to convert the land to agriculture or unsustainable levels of exploitation, much of it illegal.The State of the World’s Forests 2020 assesses progress to date in meeting global targets and goals related to forest biodiversity and examines the effectiveness of policies, actions and approaches, in terms of both conservation and sustainable development outcomes. A series of case studies provide examples of innovative practices that combine conservation and sustainable use of forest biodiversity to create balanced solutions for both people and the planet.

    Evaluation of the Strategy and Vision for FAO’s Work in Nutrition 2019

    This evaluation appraises progress achieved on the implementation of the Strategy and Vision for FAO’s Work on Nutrition since it was adopted in 2012. FAO’s nutrition-sensitive work has grown significantly since the Strategy was promulgated, and has evolved towards more deliberate efforts to address all forms of malnutrition. There also has been a surge in the development of knowledge products. However, the Strategy lacked an accountability framework and paid insufficient attention to operational issues, and therefore the extent to which the above developments can be attributed to the Strategy remains unclear. Nutrition is a domain that has traditionally been dominated by health concerns, but considerable attention is now being paid to so-called “food-based approaches”, i.e. approaches that focus on reforming food production, supply and consumption to prevent malnutrition. FAO has the mandate, a long experience in relevant technical sectors, the right tools and indicators, and the global, regional and national reach required to lead the development of food-based approaches to nutrition. However, in spite of the Strategy, FAO has found it difficult to define clear priorities for engagement in this space, thus inviting puzzlement, frustration and also competition from other stakeholders. The evaluation makes seven broad recommendations, oriented towards giving a new thrust to FAO’s work in nutrition, first through the elaboration of a new strategy taking stock of the main policy and strategic changes that occurred during the evaluation period, and communicating clearly FAO’s role and ‘niche’ in support of nutrition-sensitive food systems.

    This document contains nine papers on cage aquaculture including a global overview, one country review for China, and seven regional reviews for Asia (excluding China), northern Europe, the Mediterranean, sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America and Oceania, all of which were presented during the FAO Special Session on Cage Aquaculture – Regional Reviews and Global Overview at the Asian Fisheries Society Second International Symposium on Cage Aquaculture in As ia (CAA2), held in Hangzhou, China, from 3 to 8 July 2006. Each review, by geographic region, gives information about the history and origin of cage aquaculture; provides detailed information on the current situation; outlines the major regional issues and challenges; and highlights specific technical, environmental, socio-economic and marketing issues that cage aquaculture faces and/or needs to address in the future. The review recognizes the tremendous importance of cage aquaculture today and its key role for the future growth of the aquaculture sector. The global overview discusses the available data on cage aquaculture received by FAO from member countries; summarizes the information on cultured species, culture systems and culture environments; and explores the way forward for cage aquaculture, which offers especially promising options for multitrophic integration of current coastal aquaculture systems as well as expansion and further intensification at incre asingly offshore sites.
