Synopsis (short abstract) Trout farming is an ideal option for sustainable use of water resources in mountainous regions because here both surface and underground waters are suitable for this purpose. In regions where income-generating and employment opportunities are scarce, trout farming could help to ensure employment and steady incomes ,In addition to the production, trout farming could also ensure increased income and employment through angling tourism, restaurants and related services.

This technical paper is a basic guide to the starting and successful practice of small-scale trout farming. It summarizes all the technical information that it is important to know for small-scale trout production. In mountainous regions, where water resources could support profitable trout farming, protection of the environment is also important. Therefore, this technical paper contains sections with information about the basics of efficient treatment of trout farm effluents. The concept of this technical paper is to guide the reader through the necessary technical information, related practical solutions and the steps of preparation of both investment in and day-to-day operation of a small-scale rainbow trout farm. In order to satisfy interest for specific details, a glossary has been compiled and tables and annexes attached. Explanations are short but together with their illustrations they should be informative. Hence, it is hoped that this combination will f acilitate easy understanding and learning of rainbow trout farming.

The study presented in this document expands on the work conducted during the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) 2020 Remote Sensing Survey (RSS) and revisits the extensive dataset of areas where deforestation occurred over periods 2000–2010 and 2010–2018 to subclassify and assess deforestation drivers. Notably, considering the importance it would have in designing appropriate strategies for halting deforestation, the study assesses the share of agriculture-driven deforestation linked to small-scale and large-scale farming, both for cropping and livestock systems. The goal was not only to further characterize the global deforestation drivers in 2000–2018 but also to identify methods and tools that can help in exploring the deforestation drivers using Earth Observation – by adding more options to the original FRA RSS query and by trying to define subjective characteristics of the activities.
