    This paper looks at the Coping Strategies Index, which was developed by CARE to provide regular measurements for monitoring changes in food security and assessing the impact of food aid interventions in highly food insecure countries. The CSI is an indicator of household food security that is relatively simple and quick to use, straightfoward to understand and correlates well with more complex measures of food security.

    Information on nutrition provides us with one of the few means of evaluating the overall well-being of the population and the extent to which they have been affected by a particular crisis. Using the broader definitions of food security, information on nutrition prompts an analysis that goes beyong the issue of food availability and makes close interaction among sectors inevitable and possible. Understanding information on nutrition supports us in evaluating our concept of ‘normal’ food security and allows us to monitor the impact of crises as well as the interventions designed to address them. This paper examines the nutrition information systems in Somalia, Sierra Leone, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Afghanistan as well as Kenya. Although the case studies emphasize the nutrition component of information systems, these are examined in the context of food security and other sectoral information systems, these are examined in the context of the food security and other sectoral information syste ms existing in each country. Recognizing that the six countries studied are at the various stages and levels of crisis, a number of similarities were seen and lessons drawn from their experiences.

    These FAO guidance materials were developed to support food safety risk managers and policy-makers in applying structured, evidence-informed processes to decisionmaking. Food safety issues can have widespread impacts beyond public health. They may contribute to, or detract from the achievement of goals in areas including nutrition, food security, food trade and market access, economic and rural development. The risk analysis paradigm guides risk managers to ensure their decisions are based on an assessment of risks to health, and consideration of other factors in choosing the preferred risk management decision. The materials assist decision-makers in applying a multi-factor approach and is applied to two key decision areas – setting food safety priorities, and selecting risk management options. The principles and approaches can be applied to all food safety decisions. Case studies are included as examples of how to apply this decision-making process. Using this guidance will lead to improved food safety decisions, where decision-makers can demonstrate how evidence was used and any trade-offs made. It also facilitates stakeholder engagement, transparency and accountability throughout the decision-making process.

    Sustaining peace in the Sahel and West Africa
    Lessons learned and best practices from FAO Peacebuilding Fund projects

    Since 2018, the portfolio of PBF projects implemented by FAO in the region has consolidated considerably, with a tripling of funding mobilized. It is with a view to reinforcing this momentum of increasing PBF projects that the FAO Subregional Resilience Team for West Africa and the Sahel (REOWA) has initiated a process of exchange between country offices, with a view to generating knowledge aimed at developing best practices in peacebuilding. This summary report makes available the results of the self-assessment of the PBF projects and the highlights of the virtual workshop held on 31 May 2022, focusing on: (i) the effects induced by the interventions carried out by FAO on the peacebuilding dynamic; (ii) the good or promising practices promoted in terms of building sustainable peace; and (iii) the main lessons concerning the approach to formulating PBF projects, as well as the strategies for operational implementation and monitoring-evaluation of the interventions. This feedback will help to improve programming practices in the region's country offices, as well as fostering exchanges with colleagues from country offices in other regions of Africa and United Nations agencies that collaborate with FAO in implementing PBF projects.
