Synopsis (short abstract) This report describes a FAO initiative that sought to involve women and youth in responsible investment in agriculture and food systems (RAI) in Ghana. The initiative has involved discussions on an online forum where a wide group of people deliberated on issues that are relevant for women and youth in agriculture. Additionally, field visits, workshops, and a study on women and youth-led agribusinesses have been conducted. The report presents summaries of the discussions that took place in the forum. It also details the initial achievements of an action plan that was proposed by the participants.

    Women and youth-led agri-enterprises (WYE) (which may also be operating as family businesses) in agricultural value chains have been identified as catalysts for rural transformation given their potential for creating employment and stimulating value addition both on and off-farm. Given that agriculture and food systems are likely to remain the key generators of employment in Ghana over the coming decades, and that 80% of all activities in the midstream of food value chain are undertaken by SMEs in Africa. It is very much necessary to generate the evidence to support the argument that family, women and youth-led agribusinesses have a key role to play in the rural transformation pathway underway in Ghana.

    The Regional Capacity Building Workshop to Empower African Women and Youth on the use of the FAO-Thiaroye Fish Processing Technique (FTT) aimed to build the capacity of African women and youth on food safety, fish post-harvest losses, fish handling and processing with a focus on the use of the FTT. The meeting included: six key presentations; working group discussions on the key lessons learned and the challenges related to the adoption of the FTT; and practical training sessions on FTT use and maintenance. The sessions also provided recommendations for future actions needed to promote and support the adoption of the FTT, initially but not exclusively in the countries represented at the workshop. L'Atelier Régional de Renforcement des Capacités des Femmes et des Jeunes Africains sur la Technique FAO-Thiaroye de Transformation du Poisson (FTT) avait pour objectif de renforcer les capacités des femmes et des jeunes africains en matière de sécurité sanitaire du poisson et des produits aquacoles, de réduction des pertes après capture et de manipulation et de transformation du poisson, en mettant l'accent sur l'utilisation de la technique FTT. La réunion s’est déroulée autour de six présentations principales, de séances de travail en petits groupes sur les principaux enseignements tirés et les défis liés à l'adoption de la technique FTT, ainsi que d’une formation pratique sur l’utilisation et l’entretien des fours. Les sessions de travail ont également fourni des recommandations en matière d’actions à prendre pour promouvoir et soutenir l’introduction du FTT notamment, dans les pays représentés à l'atelier.

After shedding light on the nature of the challenges that agriculture and food systems are facing now and throughout the 21st century, the study provides insights into what is at stake and what needs to be done. “Business as usual” is not an option. Major transformations in agricultural systems, rural economies, and natural resources management are necessary. The present study was undertaken for the quadrennial review of FAO’s strategic framework and for the preparation of the Organization Medium-Term plan 2018-2021.

    The report “Reducing inequalities for food security and nutrition” has been developed by the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE-FSN) following the request by the United Nations Committee on World Food Security (CFS) as included in its Programme of Work (MYPoW 2020-2023). In particular, the CFS requested the HLPE-FSN to develop a report to: (i) analyse evidence relating to how inequalities in access to assets (particularly land, other natural resources and finance) and in incomes within food systems impede opportunities for many actors to overcome food insecurity and malnutrition; (ii) analyse the drivers of inequalities and provide recommendations on entry points to address these; and (iii) identify areas requiring further research and data collection. This report will inform the ensuing CFS thematic workstream on inequalities, aiming at addressing the root causes of food insecurity with a focus on those “most affected by hunger and malnutrition”.

    Climate change and food security: risks and responses 2015

    End hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition are at the heart of the sustainable development goals. The World has committed to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by 2030. But climate change is undermining the livelihoods and food security of the rural poor, who constitute almost 80 percent of the world’s poor. The effects of climate change on our ecosystems are already severe and widespread. Climate change brings a cascade of impacts from agroecosystems to livelihoods. Climate change impacts directly agroecosystems, which in turn has a potential impact on agricultural production, which drives economic and social impacts, which impact livelihoods. In other words, impacts translate from climate to the environment, to the productive sphere, to economic and social dimensions. Therefore, ensuring food security in the face of climate change is among the most daunting challenges facing humankind. Action is urgently needed now to reduce vulnerability and increase resilience of food systems to ensure food security and good nutrition for all.
