Kyrgyzstan is an agricultural country with rich natural resources and huge potential for organic agriculture production. Organic farming started in the country in 2004, and since then has become a priority programme of the Government’s, in view of its potential to promote health within the country and high value exports to niche markets abroad. However, the development of the organic agriculture industry has been slow due to the lack of public and private sector investment. In addition, there was no legal and regulatory framework to control and guide organic agriculture production in the country. Insufficient market information and awareness and limited market opportunities for organic agriculture products have also contributed to the slow development of the organic industry. Against this background, the main objectives of the project were to support the establishment of the legal and institutional framework on organic farming production and the organic certification system, and to strengthen capacity in organic agriculture production and marketing.
