No results found.Aquaculture has been one of the fastest growing food production sectors in the past three decades globally. The annual growth rate was at an average of 8 percent from 1984 to 2014. As the major contributor to the world aquaculture production, Asia achieved an average annual growth of 8.4 percent in the same period, and the production reached 92.8 tonnes in 2014, accounting for 91.7 percent. Currently, Asian aquaculture supplies some 60 percent of food fish for consumption while contributing significantly to rural livelihood. The rapid production growth has been largely attributed to intensification of production with increasing dependence on artificial feeding. Finfish and crustacean are two major groups of cultured aquatic animals that require artificial feeding, in the forms of commercial feeds, farm-made feeds, and fresh feeds. Their global production reached 56.8 million tonnes in 2014, including some 6.92 million tonnes of crustacean and 49.9 million tonnes of finfish. With silver carp, catla and bighead (filter feeder on plankton) excluded, it was estimated that 38.8 million tonnes of finfish out of the total 49.9 million tonnes were produced through entire or partial feeding based on the feeding habit and common culture practices. Therefore, aquaculture commodities produced through partial or complete feeding accounted for 45.2 percent globally in 2014, while it was only 42.5 percent 10 years ago. The total production of aquaculture species depending on artificial feeding has increased by 97.9 percent in the past 10 years. -

No results found.This technical paper provides a comprehensive review of on-farm feeding and feed management practices in aquaculture. It comprises of a) ten case studies on feeding and feed management practices carried out in seven selected countries of Asia and Africa for eight species that belong to four major farmed species of freshwater finfish and shellfish; b) an analysis of the findings of the above ten case studies and a separately published case study for Indian major carps carried out in India; c) ten invited specialist reviews on feed management practices from regional and global perspectives; and d) an overview of the current status of feed management practices. The country-specific case studies were carried out for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in China, Thailand, the Philippines, Egypt and Ghana; Indian major carps [rohu (Labeo rohita), catla (Catla catla) and mrigal (Cirrhinus cirrhosus)] in India and Bangladesh, giant river prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) in Bangladesh, strip ed catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) and whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) in Viet Nam and black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) in India. The broad thematic areas that were addressed in these case studies and invited reviews are: i) current feed types (including fertilizers) and their use in semi-intensive and intensive farming systems; ii) on-farm feed production and management; iii) feeding and feed management strategies, feed procurement, transportation and storage; iv) environmental , economic, regulatory and legal frameworks of feeding and feed management practices; and iv) identification of research needs. Based on the information presented in the eleven case studies, ten specialist reviews and from other relevant publications, an overview paper presents concluding remarks and recommendations on some of the major issues and constraints in optimizing feed production, use and management. -

No results found.The relationship between feed management practices and the economic efficiency of the farming operation is an important consideration for farmers and provides them with the rationale for choosing one feed management practice over another. It is economically important to optimize feed management practices that impact feed conversion ratio (FCR) and, ultimately, profitability. Amongst others, these include optimizing feeding frequency, ration and rearing temperature. The TCP project undertook to improve feed formulation and feeding strategy for these two species to improve FCR, formulate cost-effective feeds using locally available feed ingredients, improve feeding strategy to reduce FCR, feed wastage and water pollution, and provide guidelines for feed manufacturers and milkfish and Nile tilapia farmers. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO of the UN) undertook the project in collaboration with the Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Department (IFAD) of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in the Philippines.
