Synopsis (short abstract) The Coastal Fisheries Initiative (CFI) programme – a global partnership between FAO, the UN Development Programme, the UNEnvironment Programme, Conservation International, the World Bank and the World Wide Fund for Nature – has developed three legacy Global Knowledge Products to consolidate experience and lessons learned and to make its successful approaches and tangible impacts sustainable beyond the end of its five-year cycle. This e-book is the second of the series and is aimed at national and international policymakers, practitioners and development agencies. A key element of the CFI is the promotion of gender equity and equality in small-scale fisheries (SSF) given that these value chains employ 45 million women globally. However, their arduous work is often informal, underpaid and overlooked in policymaking. Addressing inequalities in women’s influence over coastal fisheries governance is essential. They have a fundamental right to take part in decisions about sustainability, conservation and the management of resources that directly affect their lives. Women also have a critical contribution to make to improve fisheries practices because their decisions and choices can affect how fishing is carried out, what and how much fish is caught, and how that fish is converted into food or income. This e-book describes successful CFI activities and approaches to empowering women in SSF to become leaders and entrepreneurs and to better their lives and livelihoods and those of their communities, while also promoting an enabling environment for gender equity and equality in SSF through participatory legal and policy reform.

    This fact-sheet aims to promote the dynamism of women processors of fishery products in West Africa with regards to organization, processing, commercialization and diversification aspects. It showcases the work carried ou by women in terms of production of dried and salted grouper in Maio pilot site (Cabo Verde), production and commercialization of smoked tuna in FFT stove in Locodjro (Côte d'Ivoire) and production and commercialization of dried shrimps and molluscs in Saloum’s islands, Niodior (Senegal). The purpose is to: i) improve the efficiency of the value chain in fishing communities by sharing forms of organizational structures, good processing, and commercialization practices of fishery products by women; and ii) raise awareness to wider audience of fisheries stakeholders so they know more options for product improvement based on CFI experience.

    Rural women are crucial contributors to Albania's agricultural sector and rural economy. They are actively involved in all stages of agrifood value chains as farmers, producers, processors, and consumers. Yet structural barriers limit their access to economic opportunities, thereby restricting also agrifood value chain sustainable and inclusive development. This publication employs FAO's gender-responsive value chain approach to analyze three case studies from Elbasan, Puka, and Leskovik. It highlights the opportunities for strengthening the role of women producers and processors in value chains and identifies key barriers that hinder women's full participation. Agribusiness incubators are highlighted in the report as innovative solutions designed to meet the specific needs of rural women and promote their economic empowerment. These incubators could play a crucial role in helping women overcome barriers in the agrifood sector, fostering their participation and unlocking new opportunities for the development of specific agrifood value chains.

    The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement is a powerful programme which promises to boost the livelihoods of African people. However, if gender equality is not a central component of its implementation, the agreement may worsen the gender gap and exacerbate the challenges faced by women producers, processors and traders due to the existing inequalities that disadvantage them. It is vital that the AfCFTA agreement roll-out ensures that trade policies, practices and regulations are gender-responsive and create the conditions for African women and girls to benefit. We must enable women to seize the new opportunities created by the AfCFTA in the agrifood sector and empower them to be economic actors and agents of change.
