Synopsis (short abstract) FAO’s current estimate for the 1998 global paddy production is 560 million tonnes, down by 17 million tonnes from the 1997 record output. The fall is largely attributed to weather-related problems that affected crops in the major producing countries, particularly China (Mainland) and Bangladesh. In some other cases, such as Japan and Egypt, lower production was the result of domestic policies designed to limit the area under rice.

    The bulk of this season's rice crop is still to be planted in most of Asia, pending the arrival of monsoon rains, although planting of paddy for the 1999 season is underway in some of the Northern Hemisphere countries. In the Southern Hemisphere and around the equatorial belt, the 1999 main paddy crop season is nearing completion. Production there is expected to rebound as a result of a ea expansion and improved growing conditions compared to theprevious season. FAO's forecast for global paddy output in 1999 is for an increase of 1 to 2 percent over last year’s level. This forecast is still tentative and hinges on the timing, extent and distribution of the Asian monsoon.

    Based on crop results in the Southern Hemisphere and expectations of bumper harvests in several countries in the Northern Hemisphere, FAO is provisionally estimating global paddy output in 1999/2000 at 593 million tonnes, 1.9 percent more than in the previous season. By comparison, the increase in 1998/1999 was only 0.9 percent, as the season was plagued with weather-related problems in the major producing countries.

    Global paddy production in the 2000 rice season, about to be concluded, is currently estimated at 594 million tonnes, or 17 million tonnes less than the record achieved in 1999. The fall reflects the general weakness of prices, which has encouraged a shift towards other crops, weather-related problems in some areas and changes in China’s cereal policies, which have prompted a cut in plantings.
