No results found.Within the world's livestock sector, broad production systems are defined and delineated. The criteria for the classification of world's livestock production systems are limited to integration with crops, relation to land and agro-ecological zones. A quantitative and qualitative description is given for each identified livestock production system in terms of feed and livestock resources, livestock commodities produced, production technology, product use and livestock functions, area covered, ge ographic locations, and human populations supported. Future trends and salient development issues are outlined for the systems and for the sector as a whole. The study also aims at providing insights into the importance of livestock systems across world regions and agro-ecological zones and related trends in order to provide orientation to decision-makers involved in livestock and agricultural development. -

No results found.Fodder trees and fodder shrubs have always played a significant role in feeding domestic animals. In fact, trees and shrubs are increasingly recognized as important components of animal feeding, particularly as suppliers of protein and especially in harsh environmental conditions. In such situations, the available grazing is not generally sufficient to meet the maintenance requirements of animals, at least for part of the year. This occurs, for example, in some mountainous regions and in the dry tropicswhere the grazing is also sometimes very degraded. Thus, in extensive animal production systems in the dry areas of Africa, it is generallye stimated that ligneous materials contribute up to 90% of production and account for 40-50% of the total available feed. Such figures illustrate the existing and urgent need not only for better knowledge but also for better use of such potential, particularly in the context of environmental degradation which is affecting our planet. On the other ha nd, in the humid tropics of Latin America, the South-cast Asia and Africa, foddersfrom trees and shrubs from leguminous species - are beginning to be utilized more dietary nitrogen supplements for ruminants. In this respect, new a significant move to look for new sources of protein from shrubs. However, given the increasing demand for forage and availability of low quality basal feed materials which require protein supplementation, high protein fodders from leguminous trees and shrubs could have a much more significant role in animal feeding systems throughout the developing world. In this respect, there is a need for more research to develop technically viable solutions. These solutions must also be economically and socially acceptable; they must preserve natural resources and protect the environment. No results found.Informed livestock sector policy development and priority setting is heavily dependent on a good understanding of livestock production systems. In a collaborative effort between the Food and Agriculture Organization and the International Livestock Research Institute, stock has been taken of where we have come from in agricultural systems classification and mapping; the current state of the art; and the directions in which research and data collection efforts need to take in the future. The bo ok also addresses issues relating to the intensity and scale of production, moving from what is done to how it is done. The intensification of production is an area of particular importance, for it is in the intensive systems that changes are occurring most rapidly and where most information is needed on the implications that intensification of production may have for livelihoods, poverty alleviation, animal diseases, public health and environmental outcomes. A series of case studies is provi ded, linking livestock production systems to rural livelihoods and poverty and examples of the application of livestock production system maps are drawn from livestock production, now and in the future; livestock’s impact on the global environment; animal and public health; and livestock and livelihoods. This book provides a formal reference to Version 5 of the global livestock production systems map, and to revised estimates of the numbers of rural poor livestock keepers, by country and live stock production system. These maps and data are freely available for download via FAO’s web pages: http://www.fao.org/AG/againfo/resources/en/glw/home.html. It is hoped that this publication will stimulate further work in this field and encourage the use of livestock production systems information and maps in research and analysis.

No results found.The global catch of the principal tuna market species (albacore, bigeye, bluefin (three species), skipjack and yellowfin) in 2010 was 4.3 million tonnes and they contributed to about 8 percent of global fish exports. Tuna is mainly marketed in fresh, chilled, frozen or canned form. However, the tuna loin and canning industry generates a considerable amount of by-products and the practice of utilization of these by-products varies in different geographical regions. In this publication, there are case studies of utilization from Asia, Europe and Latin America. Thailand is one of the largest producers of canned tuna and the by-products are mainly utilized as tuna meal, tuna oil and tuna soluble concentrate. In the Philippines, most of the canning industry by-products are converted to tuna meal, but black meat is also canned and exported to neighboring countries. Edible tuna by-products from the fresh/chilled tuna sector, like heads and fins, are used for making soup locally and visceral o rgans are utilized to make a local delicacy or for fish sauce production. Scrape meat and trimmings are also used for human consumption. In Spain and Ecuador, by-products go to the fish and oil industry and the increasing demand for these commodities, due to the growth of the aquaculture industry, drives the fishmeal and fish oil industry. However, since these are used mainly as animal feeds, they indirectly contribute to food production. -
