Synopsis (short abstract) An aquaculture improvement project (AIP) is a way for a group of stakeholders to come together to tackle high priority sustainability issues by improving the management practices and policies of all farms operating within a specified area defined by the shared use of a waterbody. After the successful formation of the Hainan Tilapia Sustainability Alliance (HTSA) that established a code of good practice on best management practices at the farm and zonal levels, further AIPs have been introduced in major shrimp producing regions in Indonesia, Thailand and Viet Nam. These AIPs have multiple objectives, but all ultimately aim to better understand and manage shared risks such as disease outbreaks and cumulative environmental impacts, and to support effective policy. AIPs can help to raise the environmental performance of multiple farms, including small-scale farms and support an individual farm’s journey towards certification.

    The Asia-Pacific region is remarkably diverse and wide ranging, geographically, in its flora and fauna, culturally, institutionally and economically. The region includes the two most populous countries in the world, China and India, a greater part of the Asian continent, the Australian continent, and many small islands, mostly in the Pacific Ocean, which are some of the smallest island nations in the world. Fisheries and aquaculture are socio-economically important sectors to most nations in the Asia-Pacific region and most nations in the region have high rates of fish consumption, mostly sourced from aquaculture although the small island nations depend to a greater extent on capture fisheries. This review entails analyses of the aquaculture sector in Asia-Pacific including the status and trends, progress made in achieving sustainable development, salient challenges, issues and anticipated future development. Status and trends are based on data extracted from the FAO Fishery and Aquaculture Statistics (FAO, 2020a; FAO, 2020b), unless stated otherwise, and are mostly for the period from 2008 to 2018 and occasionally for the period from 1990 to 2018 for relevant historical comparison and longer-term contextual analyses.

    Despite high economic growth, increasing per capita income, and high agricultural production and productivity, Asia-Pacific remains home to the majority of the world's poor and hungry. The region faces several challenges and constraints to sustainable agricultural development which call for collaboration at regional and subregional levels to attain sustainable poverty reduction and food security. To address these issues, FAO, UNESCAP and ADB jointly organized a roundtable meeting in Bangkok, Tha iland on 23 to 24 February 2004 to discuss how Asia and the Pacific can meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and World Food Summit Declaration through opportunities offered by subregional and regional collaboration, derive lessons learned and formulate a future course of action. The report provides a summary of the discussions and statements made by the high-level participants, as well as the Declaration adopted by the roundtable.

    This is the final report of the Sixth Asia Pacific Fisheries Commission (APFIC) Regional Consultative Forum Meeting (RCFM) convened in Colombo, Sri Lanka, 8-10 February 2016 under the theme “Promoting Blue Growth in fisheries and aquaculture in the Asia-Pacific region”. The “Blue Sectors” of fisheries and aquaculture make a significant contribution to food and nutrition security and the livelihoods of millions in the Asia Pacific Region. The meeting heard how these sectors face a range of challe nges and how Blue Growth Initiatives can support member countries to address them. The meeting was successful at providing member countries, partners and regional organizations a platform to present progress, discuss key issues and make recommendations to FAO.
