dc.description.abstract The Asian Development Bank and World Bank sponsored Second and Third Fisheries Projects created new demand for carp seeds. Yearly about 500 million, at least 1012 cm size fingerlings are required for implementation of targets of these projects. To meet this demand private sector should increase significantly its fish seed production, consequently quantity of hatched fry should also be increased. As time, area and capital are limited, significant increasing of broodfish populations for producin g more hatchlings, is not possible. The only wayout is to increase the productivity of broodfish and to make efforts on repeated breeding of the same fish within the same season. Though there are private farmers and government farm managers who can produce good quality broodfish, in general, the extremely high stocking density, sporadic manuring and lack of balanced feeds are the main factors hampering broodfish management. The objective of the study conducted by FAO/UNDP Project BGD/87/045 was to demonstrate technology of broodfish management of spent fish in off season as well as demonstrate methodology for preparation of broodfish for second breeding within the same season. The demonstrations were carried out during 19901992 in two Fish Seed Multiplication Farms (FSMF).
