This is the final report of a marine engineer who worked in the Sudan from December 1980 to January 1983. It describes the activities carried out relating to equipment supplied through the FAO Project and also in connection with privately owned boats and engines. A major achievement was the establishment of a fully equipped workshop at Mohamed Qol, with competent mechanics trained by the expert. Some considerations are given regarding the alternatives of using trucks or boats to transport fish a nd ice to remote villages such as Mohamed Qol. It is recommended that the problem of obtaining counterparts to work in such locations be overcome by providing better facilities and financial incentives; that closer supervision be given to the construction of fishing boats sponsored by the Fisheries Department; that attention be given to the problem of an adequate water supply in Mohamed Qol; and that additional workshops be established in Halaib and Trinkitat.

This report describes the activities of a master fisherman who worked with the project from October 1979 to April 1982. He analyzed the operations of purse seiners operating in the Gulf of Suez and recommended improvements which could substantially reduce the number of fishermen employed on each boat; he participated in a survey of conditions in West Sinai following its restoration to Egypt and made recommendations for future developments in the area; he carried out trials in the PDRY with botto m long lines and ring nets, the latter being very effective for catching 'flat herring’; and he carried out repairs to the project vessel in the Sudan. His main activities were concerned with the establishment of a community fishing Centre in Quseir, Egypt, being intimately involved not only with experimental fishing and training of fishermen but also with the physical and administrative structure of the Centre. He introduced gill netting into the area, demonstrating very clearly the potential o f this type of fishing and was actively concerned in the establishment of a number of very successful fishing camps on the Egyptian Southern Red Sea coast. Recommendations are made about the future development of the Centre both as regards its organization and the technical considerations involved.

This document presents the initial findings of an experiment to study the feasibility of installing low-powered diesel engines in suitable small craft presently operating in Sri Lanka. The diesel engine used in the experiment (Petter AC1 6 hp aircooled) was donated to the Ministry of Fisheries in Sri Lanka by the Ministry of Overseas Development, U.K. The Ceynor Foundation Limited, Karainagar, were contracted to supply the 18.5 ft GRP boat used in the experiment. The inboard motorizati on project is an activity of the Bay of Bengal Programme (Development of Small-Scale Fisheries in the Bay of Bengal — GCP/RAS/040/SWE). The Programme is executed by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and funded by the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA). The main aims of the Programme are to develop and demonstrate technologies to improve the conditions of small-scale fishermen and the supply of fish from the small sector in five countries that borde r the Bay of Bengal — Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
