Synopsis (short abstract) La agricultura contribuye significativamente a las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI), la cuales deben ser mitigadas, pero también proporciona oportunidades para un importante almacenamiento de carbono, por ejemplo, en los cultivos arbóreos y en los suelos. De hecho, el potencial global de secuestración gracias al aumento del carbono orgánico del suelo a través de las prácticas agrícolas mejoradas, se estima que oscila entre 1 y 6 Gt de carbono por año. En África, una de las con secuencias más importantes de la agricultura convencional es el rápido agotamiento de la materia orgánica del suelo (MOS). El cultivo y el uso repetido de la tierra degradan los suelos, y disminuyen su rendimiento agrícola, al mismo tiempo que aumentan los costes de producción. Los agricultores africanos tienen el potencial de reducir las emisiones de GEI y de aumentar los rendimientos agrícolas. El potencial de mitigación técnica de la agricultura en el año 2030 en África alcanzará las 2 G t de CO2-eq por año1 . Con la promesa de la reducción de las emisiones, los recursos financieros del carbono podrían financiar la capacitación de los agricultores en nuevas prácticas así como podrían establecer sistemas de Monitoreo, Verificación y Reporte (MRV) para asegurar que los beneficios agrícolas y de carbono son alcanzados. Debido a que el potencial interés en los proyectos de carbono agrícolas en África está aumentando, el número de posibles proyectos también está experimentando un aumento. Los proyectos financiados con recursos de carbono que se están llevando a cabo presentan cuatro similitudes principales: (i) una delimitación geográfica claramente definida, (ii) una organización principal que agrupa a los beneficiarios y proporciona un posible canal para proporcionar incentivos a los beneficiarios, (iii) un objetivo de reducción de carbono claramente cuantificado basado en la calculadora de GEI de FAO, EX –ACT, y (iv) acceso al apoyo de los recursos de financiación de carbono.

    Global climate studies show that not only temperatures are increasing and precipitation levels are becoming more varied, all projections indicate these trends will continue. It is therefore imperative that we understand changes in climate over agricultural areas and their impacts on agriculture production and food security. This study presents new analysis on the impact of changing climate on agriculture and food security, by examining the evidence on recent climate variability and extremes over agricultural areas and the impact of these on agriculture and food security. It shows that more countries are exposed to increasing climate variability and extremes and the frequency (the number of years exposed in a five-year period) and intensity (the number of types of climate extremes in a five-year period) of exposure over agricultural areas have increased. The findings of this study are compelling and bring urgency to the fact that climate variability and extremes are proliferating and intensifying and are contributing to a rise in global hunger. The world’s 2.5 billion small-scale farmers, herders, fishers, and forest-dependent people, who derive their food and income from renewable natural resources, are most at risk and affected. Actions to strengthen the resilience of livelihoods and food systems to climate variability and extremes urgently need to be scaled up and accelerated.
