Synopsis (short abstract) Around a billion people are chronically hungry and food insecure, with a further billion suffering from micronutrient deficiencies, which impair health and performance in life. Food and nutrition insecurity problems may have different underlying causes or combinations of causes, and may vary from acute and transitory to chronic and long term, from more to less severe. With decision makers in developing countries often lacking integrated and rigorous tools for data analysis of food and nutrition insecurity problems, there are significant implications for the allocation of resources, programme design and policy development. In this context, the project was designed to address the need for improved capacity in integrated food and nutrition security analysis through the roll out of the Integrated Food Security and Nutrition Phase Classification (IPC ).

    Crop genetic resources contain the essential building blocks that are critical to food security. Their availability is a fundamental requirement for achieving further productivity increases and higher nutritional values through plant breeding. The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) is a global agreement in which 148 Member nations and the European Union advance the multilateral agenda for addressing the interlinked challenges of crop diversity preservation, global food security and climate change adaptation. The present project, signed with the European Union, centred on support for the third funding cycle of the Benefit sharing Fund (BSF 3), whose portfolio consisted of 22 approved projects targeting 45 developing countries. The BSF 3 projects focus on helping local communities to adapt to climate change and contribute to food security. BSF 3 featured two thematic Windows: Window 2 projects supported activities ensuring that local crop varieties of importance for food security are preserved, reintroduced, developed and maintained in farmers’ fields through on farm conservation, while Window 3 projects focused on the development and exchange of value added information on plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) through scientific research and studies.

    La presencia de niveles elevados de hambre, malnutrición y pobreza en medio de una riqueza mundial y una abundancia de alimentos cada vez mayores, así como la incapacidad de proteger a las personas vulnerables de los efectos de las crisis, apuntan a la imperiosa necesidad de reformar la gobernanza mundial de la seguridad alimentaria. El Comité de Seguridad Alimentaria Mundial fue establecido en 1974 como órgano intergubernamental destinado a proporcionar un foro para el examen y seguimiento de las políticas relacionadas con la seguridad alimentaria mundial, en particular la producción de alimentos y el acceso físico y económico a los mismos. A raíz del documento sobre la reforma del Comité, aprobado por la Conferencia de la FAO en 2009, se formuló este proyecto de fondo fiduciario de múltiples donantes con objeto de ayudar a cubrir los costos de estas actividades adicionales y contribuir a la financiación extrapresupuestaria para permitir al Comité realizar sus nuevas funciones y cumplir sus nuevas aspiraciones.
