No results found.The FAO Workshop on Implementing the Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (the Agreement) that was held at the Four Points Hotel in Montevideo, Uruguay, from 29 September to 3 October 2014. The workshop focused on the implementation of the Agreement from the policy, legal, institutional, capacity development, and operations standpoints. Following a short introduction, participants were briefed on the status of the Agreement in the Latin American and Caribbean region and were informed that two countries of this region, namely Chile and Uruguay, had already ratified the Agreement. The need to implement the Agreement, both at the global and the regional levels, was stressed. Key provisions for the implementation of the Agreement were highlighted at the workshop along with the role of Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs) in supporting implementation of port State measures. The questionnaire that had bee n distributed to participating countries in advance of the workshop, with the purpose of improving their understanding of present practices, procedures and legal frameworks of countries in the region on port State measures, was analysed to ensure that recommendations to be made for the region were based on a sound knowledge basis. The role of fisheries managers and inspectors in implementing the Agreement was also highlighted. Participatory activities in working groups were conducted which led t o the formulation of recommendations both at the regional and national levels. Opportunities for regional cooperation among countries were also addressed. The evaluation of the workshop by the participants was positive. Funding for the workshop was provided by the Norwegian Government through the project "Support to the effective application of 2009 FAO Agreement on port State measures to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing" (GCP/GLO/515/NOR). -

No results found.This Regional Plan of Action to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated IUU Fishing (RPOA-IUU) has been developed by the joint Regional Working Group on IUU fishing (RWG-IUU) of WECAFC which includes two sub-regional organizations, the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) and the Organization for Fisheries and Aquaculture of Central America (OSPESCA), and was presented at the 17th Session of WECAFC in July 2019 for review, endorsement and implementation at national and regional levels. Le présent Plan d’action régional visant à prévenir, à contrecarrer et à éliminer la pêche illicite, non déclarée et non réglementée (PAR-INDNR) a été élaboré par le Groupe de travail régional conjoint sur la pêche INDNR (GTR-INDNR) de la COPACO qui comprend deux organisations sous-régionales, le Mécanisme régional des pêches des Caraïbes (CRFM) et l’Organisation du secteur des pêches et de l’aquaculture de l’isthme centraméricain (OSPESCA), et a été présenté à la dix-septième session de la COPACO en juillet 2019 pour examen, approbation et mise en œuvre aux niveaux national et régional. No results found.This review provides an overview of the status, trends, challenges and projections for aquaculture in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and evaluates the major trends during previous five years. While the sector still faces various internal and external challenges, the inherent natural potential of the region and rapidly increasing demand for fish has resulted in increased prioritization of aquaculture in almost all SSA countries and the African Union and subsidiary bodies have given special attention to the sector development. In order to realize its full potential, the SSA region needs to address a combination of overarching factors limiting aquaculture development so far, such as ineffective development approaches, weak governance frameworks, underdeveloped value chains and low availability as well as the high cost of key production inputs. Strengthened value chains for tilapia and catfish, promotion of new species, improved biosecurity, continued development of certification and associated harmonized best practices, improved information systems and innovations to address climate-change related impacts are some of the matters to be addressed. Financial institutions and private sector (national and international) have equally started investing, even though in the global picture such interventions may seem negligible, which makes the continent to call for more and higher levels technical and financial assistance from international partners. Upscale the status of production and productivity via healthy investments would help the sector to generate a variety of benefits including food security, livelihoods, employment, domestic and intra-regional markets, foreign currency income and other socio-economic benefits. -

The most innovative are multi-stakeholder initiatives, where governments and international organi- zations have joined with the private sector and civil society organizations in making commit- ments to reduce deforestation. These pledges have created opportunities for improved forest governance by envisaging the private sector at the centre of the movement. They have also encouraged a broader understanding of the drivers and and consequences of deforestation, and how these can be more realistically addressed. -

This paper includes joint FAO and WHO work to evaluate the latest information and scientific evidence available on the functional and safety aspects of food probiotics, as well as the methodology to assess such aspects, by bringing together worldwide scientific experts in the field. It includes the reports of the expert consultation and of the working group. These reports provide scientific advice in relation to the safety assessment of probiotics, general guidance for their evaluation and on specific questions in relation to their pathogenicity, toxigenicity, allergenicity, as well as to their functional and nutritional properties. The guidelines for the evaluation of probiotics in foods were developed as part of this joint effort, providing criteria and methodology to assess the efficacy and the safety of these products.
