Policy briefEcosystem approaches to agriculture for sustainable management of natural resources and livelihoods in Pacific Island Countries (PICs) 2017
Also available in:
No results found. The policy briefing outlines key policy implications for mainstreaming ecosystem approaches into the agricultural sector of Pacific Island Countries (PICs). In particular, the document highlights key challenges for the agricultural sector in PICs, related to the misuse of agrochemicals coming from an increased industrialization of farming systems across the islands. Ecosystem services approaches to farming have the potential to support the conservation of natural resources, while at the same tim e offering an opportunity for sustainably intensifying farming systems. The document also gives a summary of key issues relevant to PICs that will be looked at more in depth in an upcoming technical guidance document, produced in collaboration with the CBD and regional partners SPREP and SPC. -
Book (stand-alone)Mainstreaming Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity into Agricultural Production and Management in East Africa 2016
Also available in:
No results found. This Technical Guidance Document addresses the need for mainstreaming biodiversity and ecosystem services into agriculture, at the national level. More specifically, it is aimed to assist countries in developing and implementing their National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSA Ps), to consider ecosystem services – and opportunities for their management – in agricultural production systems. Through an EU -funded project on “Capacity-building related to multilateral agreements (MEA s) i n AC P countries (Phase 2)”, this document focuses on the East Africa region, and provides concrete examples and cases primarily from Kenya. The intention is that this document provides practical guidance to countries for building institutional capacity for synergistic implementation of MEA s, and identifying opportunities for managing biodiversity and ecosystem services to reduce the use of chemical inputs. It considers issues at the technical, institutional and policy levels. This publication is a result of technical papers prepared by experts on specific topics related to biodiversity and ecosystem services in agriculture but also on social and cross-cutting dimensions such as indigenous and traditional knowledge. -
Book (stand-alone)Policy Analysis Paper: Policy Mainstreaming of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services With a Focus on Pollination 2016
Also available in:
No results found. This publication addresses the need to strengthen the interface between the scientific community, knowledge-holders and policymakers, and build capacity for and strengthen the use of science and knowledge in policymaking on the topic of ecosystem services. With respect to the ecosystem service of pollination, FAO developed a protocol to identify and assess pollination deficits in crops – resulting in a global meta-analysis, with data from eleven countries. Results emerging from this endeavour gi ve strong indication that pollination deficits may exist in a wide variety of farming systems across the world. As a response to this science, researchers and policymakers from the eleven countries considered the range and types of actions that can address pollination deficits, and developed an indicative set of policy responses. This publication is a result of this work, which considers the mainstreaming of ecosystem services at both national and international levels, with a focus on pollinatio n services.
