Synopsis (short abstract) After eight years of armed conflict, Yemen remains one of the world’s most complex humanitarian crises. More than half of the country’s population, around 17 million people, are acutely food insecure. A crippled economy, climatic shocks and climbing food prices place already vulnerable households at further risk. Restoring agricultural production – a critical source of food and income for rural households in Yemen – is fundamental to the humanitarian response.

    One in two Yemenis are acutely food insecure, and every other child under 5 years of age is stunted. Yemen imports 85 percent of its food, making the country highly vulnerable to price hikes and supply disruptions expected this year. Two out of three Yemenis have agricultural livelihoods, yet less than USD 2 out of USD 100 goes towards helping them to produce food. These families are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change – for which Yemen ranks the third most vulnerable country. An effective humanitarian response in 2024 requires greater attention to agriculture, and those depending on it for food and income. This document provides a summary of the planned response and funding requirements of the Food and Agriculture Orgnization of the United Nations within the framework of the 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan for Yemen.

    Mali faces a severe humanitarian crisis driven by years of armed conflict, climatic hazards and high staple food prices. Acute food insecurity is expected to increase by 30 percent during the lean season (June–August) and include 1 671 people in Catastrophe (Cadre Harmonisé Phase 5). Nine out of ten Malians affected by hunger are in rural areas, where people need urgent assistance to protect and revive food production. For example, vegetable production support provides families nutritious food and income, with every USD 1 invested yielding four times its value in harvests.

    In the last year, the number of food insecure people in Cameroon has risen by 800 000. Intercommunity conflict, attacks by non-state armed groups, flooding and rising food prices are pushing people beyond their means to cope. Humanitarian agricultural assistance can help crisis-hit smallholders to meet their immediate needs and increase self-reliance, by recovering food production. FAO requires USD 18.9 million to assist 87 000 people in Cameroon in 2023.
