Synopsis (short abstract) The final formal report of the tenth session of the Coordinating Working Party on Atlantic fishery statistics (CWP) held in Madrid, Spain, 22-29 July 1980, is presented. FAO, ICES, NAFO, ICSEAF, ICCAT, OECD, EUROSTAT were the participating agencies. Major topics considered were: procedural matters; agency programs and publications presenting Atlantic fishery statistics; fishing areas for statistical purposes; fishing fleet and fishing vessel statistics; fishing gears and their standard classific ation; species items and their groupings; landings and catch statistics; conversion factors; statistics on aquaculture - inland and marine; recreational fishing; log-sheets and logbooks; standardization and harmonization of questionnaires, forms, notes, etc.; response difficulties - no respondents, poor and late respondents; the allocation of catches by nationality; discrepancies in published statistics

    The Report of the Sixteenth Session of the Coordinating Working Party on Atlantic Fishery Statistics (CWP) held Madrid, Spain, 20-25 March 1995, is presented. Three major topics were considered. The first concerned the future role of the CWP following its reconstitution and the adoption of new statutes and rules of procedure. The second major topic concerned international initiatives of relevance to the CWP, including (a) a follow-up to the Ad-hoe Consultation on the Role of Regional Fishery Age ncies in Relation to High Seas Fishery Statistics (La Jolla, USA, 13-16 December 1993); (b) the UN Conference on Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks; (c) the Agreement to Promote Compliance with Internationally Agreed Conservation and Management Measures by Fishing Vessels on the High Seas; and (d) the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. The third major topic concerned the improvement of the reliability of fishery statistics, including consideration of the consequences and extent of the problem of non-reporting and mis-reporting. Other topics considered included a review of recommendations from the Fifteenth Session of CWP; modifications to programmes in relation to fishery statistics; exchange of national fishery statistics on electronic media; modifications to ST ATLANT questionnaires; discrepancies among agency databases; bycatch and discard data; recreational and subsistence fishery statistics; fleet statistics; aquaculture statistics; conversion factors; the Handbook (4· Fishery Statistics; country and nationality issues; and economic statistics. Seventeen recommendations were agreed.
