No results found.Delegations from 54 Members of the Organization and observers from 8 intergovernmental and international non-governmental organizations met at FAO Headquarters, 22–24 July 1998, to prepare for the Consultation on the Management of Fishing Capacity, Shark Fisheries and Incidental Catch of Seabirds in Longline Fisheries. At the end of its meeting it adopted this report. The meeting discussed draft plans of action for the conservation and management of sharks and for the reduction of the incidental catch of seabirds in longline fisheries, as well as elements for a draft plan of action for the management of fishing capacity. This report summarizes the debates that took place. It also contains the guidance provided by the meeting to the FAO Secretariat about how best to proceed with the development of the documents that will be presented to the Consultation proper (26–30 October 1998). This guidance includes inter alia recommendations to the effect that the plans of action must assign the r esponsibility for actions amongst States (including other fishing entities), regional fishery bodies and international organizations. The plans should include provision for implementation and monitoring, including the issue of how to promote compliance by non-members of regional fishery organizations as well as by flag-of-convenience vessels. It was requested that technical assistance needs of developing countries be specified. It was suggested that the cost for any activities to be carried out by FAO, as part of the implementation of any international plan of action, should not be covered by extra-budgetary sources alone. -

No results found.Delegations from 45 Members of the Organization, observers from 3 intergovernmental organizations and 7 international non-governmental organizations met at FAO Headquarters, 21-23 October 1998, to hold the Technical Consultation on the Feasibility of Developing Non-Discriminatory Technical Guidelines for Eco-Labellling of Products from Marine Capture Fisheries. At the end of its meeting it adopted this report. The meeting discussed: Issues related to the feasibility and practicability of develop ing globally applicable, non-discriminatory technical guidelines for eco-labelling of products from marine capture fisheries; possible contents and format of technical guidelines on eco-labelling of products from marine capture fisheries and procedure for the elaboration of technical guidelines. During the analysis and discussions on the subject no agreement was reached regarding the practicability and feasibility of FAO drafting technical guidelines for eco-labelling for marine fisheries produc ts. However, there was consensus that if an agreement was eventually reached on the feasibility of elaborating guidelines for eco-labelling this should be consistent with the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and, in addition, should consider inter alia a number of principles listed in the Report (see paragraph 11). It was stressed that, if so decided by COFI, the development of technical guidelines should take into account and be consistent with on-going related work by other inter-gove rnmental organizations, in particular the World Trade Organization (WTO). It was further mentioned to take into account the work of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the procedures adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission as well as other relevant experiences in the subject. The Technical Consultation agreed that, if COFI decided that FAO should prepare technical guidelines, they should be voluntary and the process of drafting the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fi sheries should be followed. -

En el texto se establece una serie de actividades que deberán realizar los estados que lo apliquen, entre ellas una evaluación para determinar si existe algún problema con respecto a capturas incidentales de aves marinas en sus pesquerías de palangre y la adopción de un Plan de Acción Nacional para reducir la captura incidental de aves marinas en la p esca con palangre (PAN-AVES MARINAS) así como procedimientos relativos a exámenes nacionales y necesidades de presentación de informes. Se indican los años civiles dentro de los cuales habrán debido efectuarse esas actividades. En el PAI-AVES MARINAS se ofrece también una descripción resumida de las medidas de mitigación apropiadas. Los estados que determinen que tienen un problema con respecto a la captura incidental de aves marinas en la pesca con palangre deberían examinar la posibilidad de incluir tales medidas en su PAN-AVES MARINAS. Las medidas de mitigación que se describen han sido utilizadas ya o se encuentran en una fase inicial de elaboración. Se ofrecen las oportunas referencias bibliográficas. El PAI-TIBURONES es un instrumento de aplicación voluntaria que concierne a todos los estados cuyos pescadores practican la pesca del tiburón. En el texto se establece una serie de actividades que los estados que lo deberán realizar apliquen, entre ellas una evaluación para deter minar si existe algún problema con respecto a los tiburones y la adopción de un Plan de Acción Nacional para la conservación y ordenación de los tiburones (PAN-TIBURONES), así como procedimientos relativos a exámenes nacionales y necesidades de presentación de informes. Se indican los años civiles dentro de los cuales habrán debido efectuarse esas actividades. El PAI-CAPACIDAD es un instrumento de aplicación voluntaria que concierne a todos los estados cuyos pescadores practican la pesca de ca ptura. En la primera parte del texto se describen el carácter y ámbito del Plan de Acción Internacional y los principios en que se basa y se define el objetivo del PAI. En el resto del texto se describen medidas urgentes y se identifican mecanismos para promover su aplicación. Entre las medidas urgentes se incluyen la evaluación y seguimiento de la capacidad pesquera y la preparación y aplicación de planes nacionales. En la parte que trata de los mecanismos para fomentar la aplicación se describ e la cooperación científica y técnica, la presentación de informes nacionales e internacionales, y la función de la FAO. Se han determinado los años civiles dentro de los cuales habrán de completarse las actividades recomendadas.

Transforming food systems for food security, improved nutrition and affordable healthy diets for all
2021In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms. -

The Strategy also encourages key guiding principles for action, such as science and innovation, inclusiveness, partnerships, and access to finance.

No results found.The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018.
