Synopsis (short abstract) This first edition of the Africa Regional Gender Newsletter marks a significant milestone: the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most visionary global commitment to achieving gender equality. Over the last three decades, Africa has made notable strides towards expanding legal protections for women and girls and closing the gender gap in education. However, critical challenges persist in economic inclusion. Women remain disproportionately represented in informal and vulnerable employment, with limited access to financial services and social protection. Their livelihoods are also increasingly threatened by climate change and environmental degradation. Against this backdrop, the newsletter spotlights regional and country-level actions advancing gender equality. We feature vibrant International Women’s Day celebrations across the continent, with a closer look at initiatives in Burundi and Mali. We also highlight regional advocacy at the 11th Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD), with a focus on women’s roles in intra-regional trade. We also include inspiring stories of women leading climate adaptation efforts in Cameroon, and reflect on key capacity-building activities, such as training on gender-sensitive rural advisory services and efforts marking the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. In addition, we provide an overview of recent and upcoming Country Gender Assessments (CGAs) in agrifood systems and share updates from Gender Focal Points' meetings showcasing a collective commitment to driving impactful change.

    The Gender Asia Pacific Newsletter is issued periodically to showcase FAO’s best practices, achievements, latest knowledge products, and events promoting gender equality and women's empowerment in the Asia-Pacific region. It provides updates on the FAO Regional Gender Strategy and Action Plan 2022–2025 for Asia and the Pacific, highlighting successful gender mainstreaming initiatives, achievements, and field experiences from FAO teams dedicated to closing gender gaps and addressing inequalities, particularly in the context of eliminating hunger and poverty in the region. While primarily intended for FAO employees, the newsletter may also be of interest to the public and development partners who would like to learn about FAO's initiatives promoting gender equality in Asia and the Pacific. The newsletter aligns with a key action point of the regional gender strategy - producing and disseminating gender-responsive communication materials to support gender equality and women's empowerment.

    This edition highlights the launch of the Country Gender Assessment for Belarus, the adoption of Uzbekistan’s new Gender Strategy for Agriculture, and progress in Kosovo to strengthen rural women’s land and property rights. It also reports on gender-transformative approaches in fisheries and aquaculture in Tajikistan and FAO’s broader efforts to scale up gender equality work in the country, a landmark parliamentary declaration on rural women’s rights in Montenegro, and dialogue on women’s leadership in Kyrgyzstan. In addition, it features a new study on gender dynamics in pesticide use across Central Asia and Türkiye, and a Story of Empowerment spotlighting Zarnigor, a young beekeeper from Uzbekistan breaking barriers and inspiring women in her community.
