Relationship between forest fragmentation patterns and deforestation: the case of the Brazilian Amazon

    Tropical forests are essential for ecosystem services provision and for climate change mitigation. Amazon forest, the largest continue tropical forests in the world, have been decreasing due to deforestation and forest degradation. Brazil, a country containing most of the Amazon forests, also presents the highest deforestation rates within the Pan-Amazonian countries. The CARBAM project has been collecting bimonthly CO2 atmospheric measurements from an airplane since 2010 in the Brazilian Amazon, showing that there is a reduction on the forest capacity to absorb carbon for deforestation and climate change patterns. To understand these CO2 fluxes, we need to analyze the land use and cover change processes including forest degradation and secondary forest growth. Our goal is to assess different databases to better understand deforestation, degradation and secondary forest dynamics in the Amazon. For this, we merged different databases for the period 2010-2018: MapBiomas for land use and cover change; PRODES for deforestation; Bullock et al. (2020) for degradation; and Silva et al. (2020) for secondary forest. We found that, from the total accumulated deforested area in 2018 (17% of the Brazilian Amazon), pasture represent 69% fallowed by secondary vegetation 21% and agriculture 8%. The annual deforested area, smaller than secondary vegetation area, is increasing since 2012. Degradation has a different area each year. The carbon uptake by secondary forest and degradation dynamics is underestimated in the national communications of greenhouse gases, and its mapping is extremely relevant to policy makers to accomplish the National Determined Contribution. The large pasture areas deserve attention because it may permit the secondary forest to increase and provide agriculture expansion areas, decreasing in this way the pressure for deforestation and degradation of primary forest and contributing to preserve biodiversity and ecosystem services of the Amazon forests.     Circular (bio) economy of Brazilian planted-forest based industry: a successful case towards a sustainable, inclusive and innovative green path

    The Brazilian Tree Industry (Ibá) is the association responsible for institutionally representing the planted tree production chain with its main stakeholders. Ibá represents 50 companies and 9 state entities for products originating from planted trees, most notably wood panels, laminate flooring, pulp, paper, charcoal steel industry and biomass, as well as independent producers and financial investors. The sector holds 9 million hectares of planted trees besides 5.9 million hectares for conservation adding 7% of Brazil’s industrial Gross Domestic Product.
    Climate change has gained emergency status and requires concrete transformations, since there is no more room for the linear economy. Resources need to be intelligently used to minimize pressure on natural capital. Scaling up the sustainable bioeconomy is essential to decarbonize the economy. Committed to that change, the planted tree sector in Brazil has started to act early by investing in innovation to optimize the use of resources into valuable new solutions. This paper aims to present cases on energy, paper recycling, water circularity and the production of around 20 new products/uses coming from dozens of residues. As a brief, 95,8 % of the solid residues has at least one more use. From that, 67% of residues produce 69% of the energy demanded, contributing to a renewable energy matrix. In post-consumer waste, 67% of the paper is recycled, reducing the pressure of natural resources. In terms of water use, pulp and paper industry has decreased 75% of water needed to produce one ton of pulp and some mills and some wood panel mills have reached 100% of water circularity. This paper aims to show sectorial data and eight cases of companies from pulp and paper, panels and charcoal based steel industry moreover all benefits that (bio) circular economy brings for surrounding area of activities such as job creation, shared value, income generation etc. towards a sustainable and inclusive green path.     Our relationships with forests define the future forests: a case of national institutions and personal perceptions of private forest owners and forest professionals in Finland

    Our attitudes toward forests can be defined as human-forest relationships. These relationships are the result of our national context, the society where we live, cultural background, family and individual aspects, and of course, forests surrounding us. Human-forest relationships combine both historical and modern values and practices, reflecting the constantly evolving global, national, communal, and individual aims for future forests. Several disciplines have scrutinized people’s relationships with surrounding nature from various viewpoints, although partly disregarding forests’ unique characters and importance for societies and local communities. Our ongoing research asks what kind of relationships with forests are defined in national institutions, and expressed among private forest owners and forest professionals. The importance of research results lies especially in two grounds to which human-forest relationships affect, firstly, the acceptance or changes of current forest management practices, and secondly, activities in mitigating climate change securing our common future. The main data consist of selected national forest institutions and around 100 in-depth interviews of private forest owners and forest professionals. Qualitative data are analyzed in a theoretical framework consisting of both new institutionalism and phenomenological and narrative approaches in a multidisciplinary combination of social sciences, forest policy, and ethnology. Preliminary results reveal emerging changes in forest institutions that strengthen non-economic aims. Both private forest owners and forest professionals are partly in a state of confusion pondering what are the right institutions and actions for a sustainable future. We discuss the human-forest relationships that exist both at the national level and among individual stakeholders. We aim also to clarify the importance of existing human-forest relationships for conflict resolution and sustainable forestry.
