Synopsis (short abstract) Climate change, increasing natural disasters, food and energy crises, population growth, water scarcity and desertification, loss of biodiversity, degradation of ecosystems, migration, and growth of cities – the planet is currently facing a multitude of challenges. Mountain regions and their inhabitants are disproportionally affected, but also offer significant opportunities for solutions. By providing key environmental services such as freshwater, biodiversity conservation and hydro power to more than half of humanity, mountain ecosystems play a critical role in world development. Mountain systems are essential building blocks for long-term sustainable global development, poverty alleviation and the transition to a green economy. In a world heading towards water, food and energy crisis, sustainable mountain development is a global priority.

    In preparing an investment project, development strategies and project components are defined and revisited during project formulation through a consultative process that often includes Socio-economic and Production Systems Studies. These studies are conducted to develop an appreciation of the situation in which the intended beneficiaries live, and their perceptions of their problems, needs and priorities. The overall objective of the present study was to gather information on rural people, prod uction systems and livelihoods in the two mountain districts of Thaba Tseka and Qacha’s Nek in Lesotho, in particular to clarify the characteristics, needs and priorities of the target group as a basis for selection of possible project activities.

    The scale-up note on the partnership between FAO and the University of Torino showcases some of the activities that have been undertaken to promote the development of capacities on sustainable mountain development and its link to the Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2, 6, 12, 13 and 15. The publication highlights the possibility for practitioners, technicians and officers from governmental organisations and NGOs to participate in courses focusing on the sustainable management of mountain areas characterized by high ecological, social and economic complexity.
