Promoting Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions - GCP/GLO/204/MUL 2020

Many of the world’s poorest and most food insecure people live in mountain regions, which are some of the most fragile ecosystems on earth. A sustainable and integrated economy needs to be developed in mountain areas, which can promote and foster the well-being of local communities, granting access to a decent quality of life, reducing hunger, poverty and outmigration. However, current levels of cooperation and funding for development and conservation activities in mountains are inadequate. Against this background, the project supported the Mountain Partnership Secretariat (MPS), whose central coordinating unit is hosted at FAO, to establish an inclusive, multistakeholder platform for initiatives related to sustainable mountain development, and provide a more integrated, cohesive and harmonized mechanism, in order to stimulate stronger engagement and support from concerned member countries and mobilize additional resources.

The purpose of this training manual is to provide a capacity building framework and tools to support the technical and operational implementation of the conflict management training component integral to the Capacity Building and Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) Components of the World Bank-financed Community Based Rural Development Project (CBRDP). The initial outline for this training component was completed during a FAO mission in February 2005 based on a conflict managemen t training package developed and tested in Ghana under the Livelihood Support Programme (LSP) sub-programme 3.4 “Natural Resource Conflict Management.” The training manual was designed and finalized during an FAO-World Bank cooperative agreement technical assignment in July 2006, led by Pamela Pozarny (Rural Development Officer, FAO Regional Office for Africa) with Bizoola Gandaa and Conrad Weobong, both from the University of Development Studies, Tamale, Ghana.

Capacity building on the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) sustainability indicators for bioenergy in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Countries

This report was developed in the framework of the project “Capacity Building on GBEP Sustainability Indicators for Bioenergy in the ECOWAS countries” (GCP/RAF/515/GER-GIZ), funded by GIZ on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany. The main aim of the project was to build or enhance existing capacities of local experts to understand, assess and implement the GBEP sustainability indicators for bioenergy in Togo and Ghana, and use them to inform bioenergy policy decision making. Activities were primarily based on the sharing of experience and lessons learnt from the full implementation of the GBEP sustainability indicators within the countries of other GBEP Partners, with a focus on wood energy. Furthermore, the project aimed to sensitize policy makers and relevant stakeholders in both of the ECOWAS target countries on the potential of bioenergy production and use to better contribute to GHG emission reductions by replacing fossil fuel and traditional biomass use, while harnessing socio-economic co-benefits. This report presents the main outcomes and lessons learned of the project in Togo and Ghana, where national workshops on bioenergy and trainings on the full implementation of the GBEP Sustainability Indicators for Bioenergy were organized, with a focus on the wood energy pathway both at household scale and at productive level.
