No results found.Biodiversity is the foundation of ecosystem services to which human wellbeing is intimately linked. Biological resources are the pillars that support agriculture and mankind’s capacity to feed itself. The conservation and the sustainable use of biological diversity in agriculture are key to the long term sustainability of our food systems, and are therefore a global responsibility. The FAO Biodiversity Mainstreaming Platform adopts a systemic and holistic approach to biodiversity mainstreaming, fostering and highlighting the synergies between FAO’s work on biodiversity and connected areas, including agroecology, indigenous peoples, incentives for ecosystem services, agrobiodiversity, low carbon agriculture, nutrition, sustainable rice production, and pollination, among other relevant subjects. The goals of the FAO Biodiversity Mainstreaming Strategy include a) sustainable use of biodiversity through landscape and ecosystem approaches, b) conserve, enhance and restore biodiversity and ensure the continued provision of ecosystem services, c) promote sustainable food and agriculture systems that integrate biodiversity considerations throughout value chains and d) enhance the contribution of biodiversity, and associated indigenous and local knowledge, to food security and nutrition, ending poverty, and safeguarding resilient livelihoods. Regional consultations are being organized during the second semester of 2019 as part of the preparation of the Biodiversity Mainstreaming Strategy. The Regional Consultative Meeting on Biodiversity Mainstreaming across Agricultural Sectors in the Near East and North Africa Region (NENA) is part of this process, and is being organized by FAO in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Jordan. -

In line with its mandate to coordinate a collective effort to address challenges related to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, on 16–17 November 2021 REU organized the first Regional Dialogue on Biodiversity Mainstreaming across Agricultural Sectors in Europe and Central Asia. The objective of the Dialogue was to discuss challenges, exchange views and opportunities in addressing ways to mainstream biodiversity across agricultural sectors in Europe and Central Asia, promoting inclusive sustainable and resilient agri-food systems for improved food security and nutrition. The Regional Dialogue addressed the potential for collaborative actions among the different sectors and across countries, and the role of the FAO REU guidance. Moreover, it engaged stakeholders in consultations on the regional Action Plan for the Mainstreaming Biodiversity across Agricultural Sectors in Eastern European and Central Asian countries. -

Against this background, FAO has developed a series of instruments and tools related to biodiversity for food and agriculture (BFA) that can contribute to the implementation of the FAO Global Strategy on Mainstreaming Biodiversity across Agricultural Sectors, Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030, and in alignment with the mitigation and adaptation agenda of the UNFCCC. In line with its programming and operationalization mandate to address regional priorities, the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (REU) via the Regional Initiative n°3 on Managing natural resources sustainably and preserving biodiversity in a changing climate, developed the Regional Action plan for biodiversity mainstreaming across agricultural sectors in 17 programming countries of Europe and Central Asia. During 2022–2023, it aims at addressing the priority regional challenges.
