Synopsis (short abstract) Humanitarian needs in the Sudan in 2018 are driven by a combination of new and protracted displacement due to conflict, disruption of livelihoods, underlying poverty and vulnerability, natural hazards and high food prices. In the Sudan, it is critical to invest in safeguarding and restoring livelihoods and building resilience, particularly among people living in protracted displacement and their host communities, who face high levels of food insecurity.

    In the West Bank and Gaza Strip, thousands of Palestinians continue to be affected by the protracted crisis, repeated shocks, restrictions on movement of goods and people, limited productive capacities and lack of economic opportunities. These have eroded the resilience of vulnerable families and their capacity to cope. Given the humanitarian impact of the protracted protection crisis, urgent assistance is required to strengthen livelihood resilience and improve the food security of vulnerable people.

    Years of conflict and significant economic deterioration have left South Sudan in the grip of serious food insecurity, with women and children the most vulnerable. Despite the recent peace agreement, extreme levels of acute food insecurity are expected to persist in areas of continued conflict and poor harvests, calling for immediate and unhindered food assistance and careful monitoring. For 2019, FAO requires USD 75 million to assist 4.8 million people to protect their livelihoods and increase their resilience to shocks.
