Synopsis (short abstract) This report examines the possibilities of developing aquaculture in the Yemen Arab Republic. Although the physical conditions along the country's Red Sea coastline are not particularly favorable to such development, two areas are identified as being suitable for limited pond culture. Other areas are considered suitable for pen and cage culture. A number of species occur in the capture fisheries which would be suitable for aquaculture. It is pointed out that investigations are required to ascerta in the availability of juveniles of species intended for capture and of fish feed constituents. Trained personnel and facilities are also essential. A preliminary action plan for aquaculture development over a four-year period is outlined, giving estimated expenditures and possible revenues. However, it is recommended that, before any activities are commenced, further survey by a multidisciplinary team be carried out.

    This report reviews the fisheries situation in the Yemen Arab Republic and examines the institutions directly or indirectly concerned with the fishery sector. It discusses the main development possibilities and the support that will be required from the various institutions if satisfactory progress is to be made. Recommendations are made regarding the strengthening of the Department of Fisheries to enable it to fulfil its general responsibilities for overall development and management. It is als o recommended that the activities of the General Corporation for the Development of Fishery Resources be divided into those which relate to the provision of services to the industry and those which are of a commercial nature. Technical assistance requirements are discussed, as well as the need for closer liaison between the various bodies concerned with the fishery sector.

    The spiny lobster fishery of the Yemen Arab Republic 1982

    This report is the outcome of a two-month mission to the Yemen Arab Republic in April-June 1982. It gives background information regarding previous spiny lobster surveys and describes exploratory fishing undertaken by diving and through the use of tangle nets. The marketing situation in the country is discussed and recommendations are given for handling and processing lobster. Some basic recommendations are suggested for regulating the fishery. It is concluded that the-two species of spiny lobst er found in the coastal waters are not present in sufficient numbers to encourage large scale commercial exploitation. It is recommended that future exploitation should be encouraged as an artisanal fishery through free diving and that further exploratory fishing should be undertaken using tangle nets. The marketing system should be improved and further information should be collected on present catches, including those taken by foreign vessels.
