FAO alerts countries in the Near East and West Eurasia to enhance preparedness for foot-and-mouth disease 2025

FAO is recommending urgent biosecurity measures and enhanced surveillance following the recent detection of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) serotype SAT1 in Iraq and Bahrain. This serotype is exotic to the Near East and West Eurasia regions, raising serious concerns about the potential spread of the virus. The most important and immediate risks for FMD virus spread are associated with animal movements: intensified trade and movement of livestock; transhumance of ruminants to summer pastures; and international and national trading of animals, especially with mixing of animals at live animal markets, holding areas, and during transport. FAO urges countries to increase awareness, strengthen biosecurity, and improve preparedness at national, subnational, and community levels to safeguard livestock and livelihoods. Specific recommendations are described within the alert. Until livestock populations are immunized with a suitable SAT1 vaccine, only rapid and effective biosecurity measures can limit the spread of the SAT1 virus.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is recommending enhanced biosecurity due to the risk of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the Mediterranean region. There has been an increased number of FMD outbreaks in North Africa (Algeria, Libya, Tunisia), including the detection of a novel FMD serotype SAT2. This concerning epidemiological situation coincides with an expected intensified movement of livestock associated with the Ramadhan period.

The Third meeting of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Epidemiology and Laboratory Networks for West Eurasia was organized virtually under the umbrella of the GF-TADs, by its FMD Working Group (WG), during 17-18 August 2021. The meeting bring together members of the West Eurasia Epidemiology and Laboratory networks with the objectives to share information on the current FMD situation in the region and identify challenges; strengthen the engagement of the regional networks in capacity building programmes needed to support the implementation of the FMD control strategies in the region; update membership of the epidemiology and laboratory network leaders and regional leading laboratories; develop biennial regional epidemiology and laboratory networks workplans for 2021-2023; set the methodology for linking the laboratory and epidemiology networks for continuous support to the national and regional objectives for FMD control; and introduce the PCP-FMD self-assessment tool (SAT) for monitoring progress and assessing national capacity on implementation of the FMD control strategy.
