cThis document details the findings of the study on safety at sea undertaken in May 2006 in four countries in the South West Indian Ocean Region. The countries studied were Seychelles, Madagascar, Comoros and Kenya. In order for a better comparison and a homogenous approach, the study analysed the same themes in each country. The themes studied in detail were the relation of fisheries management to sea safety, safety programmes, data recording, legislation, boat building and vessel des ign, and other safety issues, which gave the author the possibility of including country specific aspects. The results of the country case studies are presented and analysed and conclusions and recommendations were prepared and presented in this document. -

No results found.Following the endorsement of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines) by the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) in June 2014 and in line with paragraph 13.6 of the document itself, promoting the development regional plans of action for their implementation, a regional workshop was held in Eastern Africa to discuss implementation of the SSF Guidelines. The East Africa Consultation Workshop on im proving small-scale fisheries in the context of food security and poverty eradication was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 15-18 September 2015. It was hosted by the FAO Sub-Regional Office for Eastern Africa. The workshop was attended by a total of 38 participants from Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda, including representatives of governments, regional organisations, Regional Fishery Bodies (RFBs), Civil Society Organization (CSOs), NGOs, res earch institutions, academia, other relevant other non-state actors as well as FAO staff and resource persons. The workshop noted that small-scale fisheries employ the bulk of fishers and fish workers in the region and contribute substantially to food security and livelihoods through their role in providing nutritious food and generating local and national incomes. Inland fisheries are particularly important in many countries of the region. There are many aquatic resources, including freshwater and marine resources, that are shared by two or several countries and the regional aspects of small-scale fisheries are hence important. The overall objective of the workshop was to facilitate the understanding of the principles of the SSF Guidelines and their application in order to support sustainable small-scale fisheries and Blue Growth. During the three and a half days, participants examined the current status of small-scale fisheries in the region and shared experiences through country and topical presentations, and discussed priorities and actions for implementing the SSF Guidelines at regional and national levels. -

The Regional Workshop on Safety at Sea in Artisanal and Small-Scale Fisheries in Latin America and the Caribbean took place in the city of Paita, Peru, from 2 to 4 July 2007. Thirty-seven Latin American experts, as well as experts from Sweden and representatives of FAO and the Latin American Organization for Fisheries Development (OLDEPESCA) participated. The workshop was developed through joint cooperation between the Fishing Technology Service of FAO and OLDEPESCA. During the works hop, the results of the “Study on safety at sea in artisanal and smallscale fisheries in Latin America and the Caribbean” were presented, as well as other presentations on different aspects of safety at sea by invited experts. In addition, experts from participating countries made presentations on the situation of safety at sea in small-scale fisheries in their respective countries. The information presented was debated in plenary and included such themes as safety at sea in fisheries management, safety measures and fishing operations, registration of information on accidents at sea and legislation, as well as technology, design and construction of vessels. Finally, the framework for a regional strategy on safety of human lives at sea and a work programme whose objective is to strengthen systems on safety at sea through regional and international cooperation was elaborated and approved by the participants.
