No results found.An FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission visited Rwanda from 7 to 15 June 1996 to review the outcome of the 1996 season ‘B’ food crops harvest, to evaluate the food supply situation in the country and to estimate import requirements for the second semester of 1996, including food aid. The Mission visited major food crop growing areas and conducted interviews with Government officials concerned at national and local levels, farmers, officials of NGOs, international agencies of the UN sy stem and bilateral donors. The Mission also benefited from the results of preliminary surveys on the evolution of the 1996 ‘B’ agricultural season, organized by FAO in all prefectures. Like the preceding season, the 1996 season ‘B’ was characterized by an increase in the area planted averaging seven percent, with major increases for sorghum and potatoes (17 percent) and pulses (14 percent). These developments reflect the improved stability in the interior of the country and the resumption o f regular agricultural activities by a considerable number of returning refugees. Growing conditions have been generally favourable, with timely and regular rainfall except for some pockets of drought. -

No results found.The food security situation in Burundi has been deteriorating steadily since 1993 due to civil strife, large population displacement and reduced agricultural production. This situation was further aggravated by an economic embargo imposed by the neighbouring countries which resulted in insufficient availability of agricultural inputs, price increases, and subsequently in a deterioration of access to food by poor households and internally displaced people. Against this background, an FAO/WFP C rop and Food Supply Assessment Mission was fielded to Burundi from 18 June to 1 July 1997 to evaluate the 1997B season crop production (harvested from June), assess early prospects for the third crop (to be harvested in September), and, on the basis of its findings, to estimate the country's import and food aid requirements for the remainder of 1997. To achieve these objectives, the Mission held extensive discussions with Government officials and UN specialized agencies (UNDP, FAO, WFP, UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR); and visited as many provinces as the prevailing security situation permitted. Prior to the Mission’s arrival, a pre-evaluation survey had been conducted throughout the country with the assistance of an FAO TCDC expert. -

No results found.An FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission visited Rwanda from 27 November to 11 December to estimate the outcome of the 1996-A crop and the food aid requirements for the first six months of 1996. In Kigali, the Mission met national officials responsible for monitoring food production, notably at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. Team members also met officials from United Nations agencies and from other international organisations. Two weeks before the arri val of the Mission a preliminary survey had been undertaken in all ten prefectures, resulting in a comprehensive summary of current crop progress in each prefecture which served as the Mission's starting point. In addition, the Mission visited six prefectures, including those most affected by the crisis. The 1996-A season is characterised by a significant increase of 14 percent of the area under cultivation, compared to season 1995-A, due to an increase of the rural population since the closing of camps for inter nally displaced persons and their su bsequent resettlement on farms. Moreover, many old-caseload and some new-caseload refugees have returned to cultivate. The international community continued its assistance in kind in the form of seeds and tools.
