ProjectBiomass, Density and Size of Fish of the Lower Order Streams in the Sepik-Ramu Catchment Raw Data
Sepik River Fish Stock Enhancement Project: PNG/85/001. Field Document No. 14
1990Also available in:
No results found. The survey on the ecology and biology of the fish fauna of the lower order streams in the Sepik-Ramu catchment commenced on January 1988 as subproject of the Sepik River Fish Stock Enhancement Project (PNG/85/001-09) with a sampling program that extended to mid 1989. This report presents some of the raw data obtained as a result of this survey. These are: data on number of specimens, total weight of specimens, size range and average size per species per sample. -
ProjectPreliminary Analysis of Stomach Contents of Various Fish Species from the Lower Order Streams in the Sepik-Ramu Basin and Identification of Vacant and Underutilised Trophic Niches
Sepik River Fish Stock Enhancement Project: PNG/85/001. Field Document No. 8
1990Also available in:
No results found. This document provides an analysis of the stomach contents of nearly all species that were collected during the field trips in the Sepik-Ramu catchment area made from January 1988 - September 1989 (Van Zwieten 1990a) . The stomach contents analysed in this report are in general taken from fish that were sampled during the whole sampling period from all areas covered. The data presented are averages from all the specimens of a single species analysed; no attempt has been made to unravel differenc es in feeding behavior as reflected by stomach contents in different size groups of species. Variations in stomach contents of specimens of one species collected, from different rivers are yet to be analysed. Furthermore it is not possible, as yet, to say anything about seasonal changes in feeding. These aspects will be considered in separate publications. For our purpose the present level of analysis is sufficient: the identification of vacant and underutilised trophic niches in the lower order streams of the Sepik-Rarnu catchment. -
ProjectSurvey of economic activities, animal protein intake, fishery activities and fish yieids in the Sepik-Ramu catchment, 1991-1992. Part II· Results and Discussion
Sepik River Fish Stock Enhancement Project: PNG/85/001. Field Document No. 18b
1993Also available in:
No results found. In 1987 the Sepik River Fish Stock Enhancement Project (SRFSEP) started its activities. During the first stage (1987 - 1990). studies on the fish stocks in the lower order streams and rivers in the Sepik-Ramu catchment area were conducted. Prior to this the fish stock and fishing activities of the Sepik flooplain only had been studied. It was concluded that the yield from the Sepik-Ramu catchment area was about 10% that which could be expected from a similar size river system elsewhere in Asia. Afica or South America. The fish stock is thoughuo be limited by the-absence of native fish species from freshwater fish families due to the geological history of New Guinea. and the very recent creation of the Sepik floodplain (approximately 6000 years ago), with consequently very few (3) native fish species which are well adapted to floodplain conditions (Coates 1990). It was proposed that new fish species should be imported and stocked in the Sepik-Ramu catchment area to increase the total fi sh stock as a means to increase the fish catches. nutritional status and income of the population residing in the catchment area. During the first phase of the project several species were identified as suitable in terms of expected impact on fish yields and expected minimum effect on native fauna. Actual stocking of newly imported fish species by the project started in June 1991.
