Synopsis (short abstract) Meeting the targets of the 2030 Agenda in rural areas requires innovative approaches to unlock the potential of agriculture, promote sustainable growth and enhance rural livelihoods. This implies investing in the restoration and sustainable management of landscapes and territories, so that they can provide the basis for long-lasting productive agriculture and food systems and generate job opportunities and adequate incomes. The management of local socio-ecological systems requires effective stakeholder engagement, consensus building, strong local institutions and a shared vision of goals and priorities. This programme seeks to strengthen the planning and coordination capacities of local institutions to design and implement action plans and to mobilize investments for sustainable rural development. The key sectors of interest include those aiming to reduce rural poverty, promote local development and preserve the environment, starting with sustainable agriculture practices. FAO, together with its partners, aims to identify successful approaches, foster evidence generation and promote knowledge exchange, including through South‒South cooperation.

    This case study seeks to understand how local pastoral communities could play in the management of drought in Iran. It begins with an examination of the range of organisations that are involved in drought management in Iran. The next section focuses on the experience of the drought of 1999-2001 in the words of Qashqai pastoralists from the south of Iran. Their testimonies make a strong case for increasing the involvement of local communities in managing natural disasters that affect them.

    Empowering Women, Increasing Institutional and Local Resilience and Recovering and Preserving Forestlands in West Honduras - GCP/HON/045/CAN 2024

    The PROMUCLIMA project was created to address critical challenges in 12 municipalities in western Honduras, where economic and environmental proposals were required to improve governance systems in those communities depending on forest and agroforestry resources. In addition, this context highlighted the need to support rural and Indigenous women, and youth, who were excluded from sustainable development and climate action decision-making processes.The project aimed to promote women and youth’s economic empowerment through the improvement of their knowledge and capacities, the reduction of time and efforts spent on house chores according to local plans, as well as the improvement of their access to different local, national and international markets, and the establishment of relationships with other public and private stakeholders, in order to obtain new financial opportunities.

    The Rural Development Division (SDA) of FAO tackles the issue of disaster risk management from an institutional perspective within the context of Rural Development and Decentralization. This interim report summarises the main issues, findings and recommendations arising from the first phase of SDA’s work on DRM, including a first consolidation and comparative analysis of a literature review, case studies and the workshop discussions.
