FAO’s forecast for global paddy output in 1998 has been revised downwards by 4 million tonnes to 557 million tonnes. This would be about 20 million tonnes, or approximately 3.5 percent lower than the previous year's revised record level. The downward adjustment is based on the preliminary assessment of the damage caused by floods in a number of rice producing Asian countries in the northern hemisphere.
