Proper use of timely and reliable agricultural sector data is essential for agriculture policy formulation and programme development. However, in many cases the information available is incomplete or unreliable. To fill these information gaps, alternative methods are needed to complete the analysis. This expert consultation helped to identify some of these approaches and illustrated the use of various analysis procedures. In addition, procedures and analyses related to formulation, monitoring an d evaluation of relevant policies critical to poverty alleviation and food security were considered. Early warning systems, food balance sheets, crop forecasting, time series and seasonal price indices, trade flow data for estimation of production, principal components analyses and agricultural census tabulation and analysis are all important inputs to this process. However, the availability of information alone is not sufficient; it is also necessary to ensure that users have access to it. The expert consultation looked at the way in which FAO is developing a database system for countries to organize national data (at subnational levels) and how the Data Warehouse can be used to present information from censuses and surveys.

Overall, global paddy production in 2000 is forecast to decline by 14 million tonnes to 594 million tonnes, about 2 percent less than the last season. The contraction in output was brought about by relatively low prices of rice, unfavourable weather conditions and, in some instances, government policies that have led to a cut in the area under rice.

The Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, at its Seventeenth Regular Session, adopted its Work Plan for the Sustainable Use and Conservation of Micro-organism and Invertebrate Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. In response to the workplan, a study on the sustainable use and conservation of fermentation-associated microorganisms within the agrifood system was prepared. The study delves into traditional and modern fermentation techniques and their potential contributions to food security. The study aims to inform the Commission, governments and practitioners on the state of conservation and policy landscape surrounding fermentation-associated microorganisms, including a review of existing access and benefit-sharing frameworks for these genetic resources.
