Synopsis (short abstract) World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of water and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day.

World Food Day 2023 shines a spotlight on water as the foundation for life and food. It raises awareness worldwide about the importance of managing water wisely as the availability of this precious resource is threatened by rapid population growth urbanization, economic development, and climate change. The campaign also looks at solutions to produce more food and other essential agricultural commodities with less water, while ensuring water is distributed equally, our aquatic food systems are protected, and nobody is left behind.
