Synopsis (short abstract) Properly spaced trees help provide many of the same benefits of a complete perennial cover. Fine soil particles contain most of the humus and nutrients in the soil, and if lost, soil fertility is reduced, while windbreaks help protect cropland by reducing wind velocities for a distance approximately 15 times the height of the tallest trees, thus providing significant reductions in the rate of soil loss over large areas. Establishing wind breaks is a practice that is highly suitable for degraded soils in the coastal regions of Vietnam prone to water erosion and to the winds accompanying typhoons during the rainy season. Eucalyptus and cashew, the tree species that have been identified to break the cycle of land degradation, are also suitable for moderately saline soils.

Since 2008, the Republic of Ghana has implemented activities for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+). These actions include establishing a multi-purpose national forest monitoring system (NFMS) to improve land use monitoring capacities in the country. Development of Ghana's NFMS strengthens the accessibility and accuracy of forest-related data for meeting national and international climate targets. This case study may serve as an example to other countries implementing NFMS, as it describes the purpose of an NFMS, the design, related stakeholders and other actors, as well as the challenges and successes experienced in Ghana.

This step-by-step manual contains information on the construction of small multi-purpose boats typical of those found in the Ayeyarwaddy Delta in Myanmar. Its purpose is to give organizations access to detailed information on boatbuilding, which will allow the production of small boats appropriate to the Delta. The manual is also intended to assist organizations in their understanding of the boatbuilding process and to provide guidelines on good practice. It should assist in the review o f contracts and quality control in boatbuilding. The manual provides information on two boat designs: 12 ft and 18 ft boats. It also gives the scantlings and material requirements as well as the guidelines for selecting and using timber for the boat construction. The largest part of the manual describes how to build the boats step-by-step. Finally, the manual contains boatbuilding guidelines for wooden boats of less than 7 m in length and operating at speeds of less than 12 knots.
