Synopsis (short abstract) The EAF-Nansen Project has designed a university-level training course on the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) that it has already run in partnership with a number of universities in Africa. PowerPoint resources were developed specifically for the EAF course including standard modules and lecture notes. This handbook has been conceived to complement the PowerPoint presentations and to bring in one place the examples given in the course, key reference materials, suggested readings, exercise s and case studies to support the trainers and trainees. The handbook has eight course units and is expected to be run over a period of three to four weeks. Units 1 to 4 provide a general introduction to global fisheries, fisheries management and principles of the ecosystem approach to fisheries. Units 5 to 8 are on the main steps of the EAF planning process that results in the formulation and implementation of a fisheries management plan. Each unit is covered in a separate chapter that opens wi th the objectives and what the student is expected to know at the end of the unit.

    While support for an ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM) has long been recognized, progress in its implementation in the Asia-Pacific region has been slow. This is due in part to a lack of relevant skills by fisheries managers in applying an integrated and holistic approach to fisheries management. This training course aims to overcome this gap by providing capacity development in how to: manage fisheries more holistically, better resolve fisheries issues and challenges, reduce use r group conflicts, work cooperatively with other stakeholders, and help unlock financial resources. Participants will work with a template to develop an EAFM plan for their area. They will also learn and practice crucial skills for effective communication, facilitation, and conflict management. This volume is part of a three-volume training package for use by trainers and trainees.

    This Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries management training course (Inland Fisheries) is designed as a complete training course for the sustainable management of inland fisheries using the ecosystem approach. It is targeted at middle-level fishery and environment officers, extension workers, facilitators and other stakeholders engaged in the planning and management of inland fisheries. This training course is designed to be applicable to many inland fishery contexts around the world (including overlapping freshwater fishery and aquaculture systems). It is also intended to be adapted to suit specific local contexts. This the first of three volumes, developed for the training course: VOLUME 1: HANDBOOK FOR TRAINEES VOLUME 2: INLAND FISHERY CASE STUDIES VOLUME 3: TRAINING COURSE PRESENTATIONS & VISUALS VOLUME 4: TRAINING SESSION PLANS This volume is VOLUME 2: INLAND FISHERY CASE STUDIES and contains five example case studies of how EAFm approaches can support the management of inland fisheries.
