    The sixth session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) was held in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 30 June to 3 July 2003. It was attended by delegates from fourteen members of the Commission. The Committee reviewed work by its subcommittees during the intersessional period, appraised research activities, formulated advice on fishery management and research and agreed on a workplan for 20032004. In particular, SAC invited the Commissi on to encourage members to adopt measures aimed at adjusting fishing effort to maintain selected small pelagic and demersal recruitment stocks at levels compatible with sustainable exploitation. The Committee requested that the Commission reinforce the implementation of the measures that would contribute to reverse declining biomass of a number of important stocks. SAC endorsed proposals of its Working Group on Operational Units and noted progress made by the Joint GFCM/ICCAT Working Group on Tu na Farming. The Committee made suggestions to rationalize some aspects of its modus operandi. It further welcomed the undertaking of an appraisal of its achievements and recommended that the outcome be presented at the next session of the Commission. The Committee unanimously elected a new chairperson, and first and second vice-chairpersons and further endorsed the nomination of coordinators of the four subcommittees.

    The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its seventeenth session at the FAO headquarters, Rome, from 24 to 27 March 2015. The session was attended by 19 Contracting Parties, 10 observers, representatives of the FAO regional projects and the GFCM Secretariat. The Committee reviewed the work carried out during the 2014–2015 intersession, including within its subsidiary bodies and formulated advice in relation to the following asp ects: i) status of the main commercial stocks and proposed management measures for selected fisheries, ii) measures to mitigate bycatch of elasmobranchs and iii) methods to integrate socioeconomic information into scientific advice. In addition, the Committee adopted its Data Collection Reference Framework (DCRF) due to be submitted to the Commission at its thirty-ninth session for endorsement and to be used as a basis for discussions on potential decisions related to data collection. Delegates were also informed about the progress made in the elaboration of the first biennial report on the status of Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries, prepared upon the request made by the Commission at its thirty-eighth session and proposed to be published in 2015. Furthermore, the Committee reviewed the technical contents of a proposal for the establishment of a new fisheries restricted area (FRA) in the northern sector of the Strait of Sicily, to be submitted to the Commission for discussion at i ts thirty-ninth session. Against the backdrop of the recent amendment of the GFCM legal framework, the Committee proposed a new reference framework and formulated suggestions regarding its future functioning and structure; these should be further discussed by the Commission on the occasion of its next session. Finally, the Committee agreed upon its work plan for 2015–2016, including a list of proposed activities and meetings.

    The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its ninth session at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, from 24 to 27 Octobre 2006. Delegates from 18 Members of the Commission participated. The Committee reviewed the intersessional activities of its four Sub-Committees and those of the Regional projects supporting the Commission, as well as the outcome of the Coordinating Meeting of the Sub-Committees (CMSC). SAC reviewed and refor mulated management advice; it furthermore showed appreciation for a gradual implementation of the 40 mm square mesh codend of bottom trawls. The Committee took note of progress achieved on the measurement, calibration and allocation of fishing effort, and adopted the statistical scheme (Task 1 matrix) for the data collection on Operational Units (OUs). The SAC encouraged the use of socio-economic indicators in fisheries management, including in recreational fisheries. The Committee proposed to relaunch the activities of the GFCM/ICCAT Joint Working Group on Large Pelagic Species. The Committee agreed upon its Workplan for 2007.
