Synopsis (short abstract) The inland fisheries sector in Sudan represent an important source of livelihoods and well-being for individuals and communities, as well as a potential for food security enhancement for the country. Despite this, the populations that depend on this sector continue to suffer from poverty, lack of employment, food insecurity, illiteracy, health constraints, gender inequality, and poor policy protection, which result in overall weak human dignity. The overall objective of the study was to get a be tter understanding of the dynamics of the fisheries and aquaculture sector, the livelihood situation of the small scale inland fishers communities living along the Nile, White Nile and Blue Nile, to gain a general idea of the challenges and constraints that these people goes through and to generate strong, practical recommendations based on the real context of the inland fishing communities, to better design, plan, implement, monitor and evaluate future fisheries and aquaculture projects in Suda n.

    Following the endorsement of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines) by the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) in June 2014 and in line with paragraph 13.6 of the document itself, promoting the development regional plans of action for their implementation, a regional workshop was held in Eastern Africa to discuss implementation of the SSF Guidelines. The East Africa Consultation Workshop on im proving small-scale fisheries in the context of food security and poverty eradication was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 15-18 September 2015. It was hosted by the FAO Sub-Regional Office for Eastern Africa. The workshop was attended by a total of 38 participants from Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda, including representatives of governments, regional organisations, Regional Fishery Bodies (RFBs), Civil Society Organization (CSOs), NGOs, res earch institutions, academia, other relevant other non-state actors as well as FAO staff and resource persons. The workshop noted that small-scale fisheries employ the bulk of fishers and fish workers in the region and contribute substantially to food security and livelihoods through their role in providing nutritious food and generating local and national incomes. Inland fisheries are particularly important in many countries of the region. There are many aquatic resources, including freshwater and marine resources, that are shared by two or several countries and the regional aspects of small-scale fisheries are hence important. The overall objective of the workshop was to facilitate the understanding of the principles of the SSF Guidelines and their application in order to support sustainable small-scale fisheries and Blue Growth. During the three and a half days, participants examined the current status of small-scale fisheries in the region and shared experiences through country and topical presentations, and discussed priorities and actions for implementing the SSF Guidelines at regional and national levels.

    This seminar will discuss the role of cooperatives, fishers’ organizations and other institutions in strengthening the bargaining power of small-scale fishers as a strategy to reduce rural poverty. In particular, the seminar will show how small-scale fisheries contribute to poverty reduction, community development and food security around the world and will present successful examples of collective action for poverty reduction in the fisheries sector from India and Costa Rica.

    Vigo Dialogue on decent work in fisheries and aquaculture Fish is one of the world’s most traded food commodities with millions of people depending on fisheries as a source of jobs, income and livelihoods. In 2016, FAO data indicates that 59 million people were directly engaged in the primary sector of capture fisheries and aquaculture. Numerous international and national initiatives are now calling for increased social responsibility and improvements of social and labour conditions in fisheries value chains. Such initiatives are increasingly supported by governments, non-governmental organizations, industry, certification schemes and international governmental organizations and agencies.
