An FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission visited Sudan from 14 November to 6 December 1995 to forecast production from the 1995 sorghum and millet harvests and from the 1995/96 wheat crop, and assess the national cereal s ituation, including forecasts of import requirements and food aid needs in 1995/96. The Mission visited all states except those in southern Sudan. Information on the southern states was derived from an earlier GIEWS Mission and from data obtained b y WFP/UNDP/UNICEF d uring relief operations in the South in 1995. The Mission also visited the Northern province of Upper Nile state in the South. Full cooperation was received from the Government's Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Animal Wealth (MANRAW) and from the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) at both federal and state levels, and from other concerned Ministries and parastatal organizations. In addition, the Mission consulted with all the main bilateral and multilateral organization s, and with NGO representations. An FAO Crop Assessment Mission visited Southern Sudan from 11 September to 5 October, 1996 to estimate production of the 1996 sorghum, maize and millet crops and assess the food supply situation in the area. The Mission visited nine of the ten states of southern Sudan. The Mission received full cooperation from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and from the Humanitarian Aid Commission at both federal and state levels as well as from concerned Ministries and parastatal organizations. The M ission also consulted with UNICEF both in Kenya and in Khartoum, with WFP and the major international and national NGOs working throughout Southern Sudan. Field visits were made throughout southern Sudan in cooperation with WFP and UNICEF staff at the Nairobi and Khartoum offices. The Mission estimates the total cereal harvest for 1996 at 473 700 tons, comprising 388 000 tons of sorghum, 85 000 tons of maize and 700 tons of millet. The millet was produced in the mechanized sector in Northe rn Upper Nile State. Small quantities of millet and rice are also grown in some other states but this has been included in the estimates for sorghum production. The above figures include an estimate of production for Raja Province in West Bahr El-Ghazal state, which could not be visited by the Mission because of logistic constraints.

With generally favourable rains and relatively few outbreaks of pests and diseases, cereal production, in the traditional sector, in 2010, is estimated at 695 000 tonnes, about 28.5 percent above the revised post-harvest estimates in 2009, when crops were severely affected by dry weather conditions. Localised dry spells last May and June as well as floods in August and September have affected yields in some areas Animal body conditions are satisfactory due to improved availability of pastu re and water; fishery is expected to yield above average catches this year. Cereal prices have generally declined in the third quarter of 2010, while livestock prices were on the rise, signifying that the terms of trade are now more favourable to pastoralists...
