This document was generated under the Technical Cooperation Project TCP/RAB/3802 “Capacity development for the sustainable management of soil resources in the NENA region to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” and it was formulated to address the regional and national prerequisites to raise awareness on the importance of soils in the NENA region and to conserve and manage them sustainably. Soil degradation by salinity, sodicity and erosion and the resulting loss in soil functions represent a growing threat in NENA that increasingly threatens food security in the region. The two-year TCP/RAB/3802 project started in October 2020. The project ultimately involved 11 countries in NENA, (Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Kingdom of Morocco, the Lebanese Republic, Republic of Iraq, Republic of Sudan, Republic of Tunisia, Republic of Yemen, Palestine, Sultanate of Oman and Syrian Arab Republic) and focused on (1) enhancing the understanding of soil characteristics/challenges and management practices, (2) strengthening national capacities for the implementation of normative tools on sustainable soil management (SSM), and (3) strengthening regional and interregional collaboration on SSM.

The platform acts as an information and knowledge hub that effectively links relevant stakeholders to consolidate, as much as possible, the available knowledge, information, innovations related to date palm value chain and production problems such as red palm weevil, pollination, soil and irrigation management, etc. The digital innovation platform was launched in the opening ceremony of the 7th International Date Pam Conference on March 14, 2022 in Abu Dhabi. The platform was designed to facilitate a full cycle model from idea to innovation and vice versa and this includes the backend server and software for storing data, processing information, providing artificial intelligence support and providing web services to communicate with other parts of the platform. The frontend applications provide interface to various stakeholders and display reports and statistics via dashboard. The platform is characterized by active dashboard for discussion forum, projects, news, activities, reports and statistics and performed as a knowledge hub that effectively utilize any new opportunities in an economic or social process. The operationalized research and innovation platform demonstrates a model of collaboration among relevant stakeholders and partners on issues, research, development, innovations, regulations and funding. The platform also identifies a set of research priorities, gaps and practices, promising technologies and technical innovations related to the date palm value chain. Therefore, this generated knowledge with better integration among stakeholders, enhanced learning processes with multiple benefits, created business opportunities by deploying new technologies, markets, learning and networking, and leveraged change in resource mobilization. The platform can also actively enhance the capacity of producers, stakeholders and young professionals in the region.

This report provides a unique, sector-specific synthesis of the agriculture, water and land use sectors in the nationally determined contributions from Near East and North Africa. It summarizes the substantial contributions already put forward by countries, opportunities for further action and the gaps, barriers and needs that will need to be addressed if the region is to raise mitigation and adaptation ambitions. The findings of this report will help member countries to reflect on their progress in advancing toward nationally determined contributions priorities for agriculture, water and land use, and associated national climate goals including related targets under the Sustainable Development Goals. The analysis also helps to make clear the links between the nationally determined contributions from the region and the ongoing work of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in support of the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA). Finally, the report serves as a guide to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, as well as other international actors, of the support that will be required to help countries in the region move forward to implement agriculture, water and land use priorities in their NDCs and ensure that future commitments from the sector are quantifiable, verifiable and sufficiently ambitious.
