The Meeting was convened by RECOFI and FAO and attended by 12 participants from the following seven RECOFI member countries: Iraq, Iran (IR), Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and UAE in addition to the FAO Secretariat and one invited expert. The meeting included participation from the Convention on Migratory Species-United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP/CMS) Secretariat. The WGFM welcomed the entry into force of the MoU between ROPME and FAO/RECOFI, stressing the importance of collective interests and common mandates of the two parties to the MoU. IUU fishing was found a major issue affecting the sustainable exploitation and conservation of marine fishery resources. There was an agreement that IUU fishing-related issues, on the many occasions, were brought to the attention of the WGFM. The WGFM welcomed the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication and acknowledged the great deal of global effort devoted to the development the SSF Guidelines. The WGFM acknowledged the benefits of developing FIRMS Marine Resources of regional relevance for the RECOFI region and recommended the initiation of the process focusing on Spanish mackerel. It was proposed that FAO could provide further support in developing specific case studies using the EAF approach in the RECOFI Area. Participants provided updates of the current work ongoing at the national level with regards to the RECOFI priority species, and discussed data collection challenges. The Meeting noted the difficulties in reporting and sourcing updated data and agreed on freezing the number of current RECOFI priority species. The Terms of Reference for the FIRMS Regional Focal Point were approved. The Meeting was informed that at its ninth session (2017) the Commission was of the opinion that it did not have enough background information about splitting some FAO sub-areas and requested the WGFM to re-consider the proposal to split FAO sub-area 51.3 into divisions 51.3.1. Findings and recommendations of the Workshop on Regional Joint Assessment of Kingfish (Scomberomorus commerson), which was held in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman on 17-18 February 2019 were discussed. The results reveal that the stock appears to be in an overexploitation status with the current fishing mortality and landings exceeding the levels required to exploit the stock at MSY. The WGFM adopted the proposed recommendations of the workshop with certain modifications. The RECOFI Secretariat was asked to submit these recommendations to the tenth Session of the Commission. -

No results found. The sixth meeting of the Working Group on Aquaculture (WGA) of the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) was held in Muscat, Oman, from 21 to 23 October 2014 and was attended by representatives from seven member countries. The WGA reviewed the outcome and recommendations of the sixth and seventh sessions of the Commission. The WGA noted the importance of the timely collection, submission and sharing of accurate aquaculture statistics and other relevant aquaculture information. A draft recom mendation on the minimum reporting of aquaculture data and information was discussed. The meeting agreed that RECOFI members would provide their comments at the next session of the Commission, when the recommendation will be presented for adoption. In the event the recommendation is adopted, it was agreed that the aquaculture data and information would be best submitted by the individual countries through specifically designed and dedicated templates accessible from the Regional Aquaculture Info rmation System (RAIS) website. The meeting discussed the RAIS following the presentation of the web analysis report, which indicated a steady interest in the information system particularly among the Arabic-speaking countries. Actions to further consolidate and expand the system were discussed, along with the need to improve the overall communication outputs at the national and regional levels. The WGA finalized its proposed programme of work for the next intersessional period, based also on the WGA programme adopted by the Commission at its seventh session. The main activities identified for the next work plan include: a training workshop on aquaculture risk analysis; a technical workshop on aquaculture recirculation technologies; a training workshop on aquaponics; hands-on training in marine hatchery technologies; and a technical meeting to share regional experiences in the use of GIS and spatial analysis in coastal zone management and marine aquaculture planning and development. In view of emerging aquatic animal health issues, the WGA further agreed that, during the implementation of the workshop on aquaculture risk analysis, the technical experts from the member countries would also discuss priority issues related to aquatic animal biosecurity and identify activities that required action. The WGA recognized that the Commission, based on its current level of financial contribution, might not have the required budget to implement a comprehensive aquaculture programme, and it recommended that some activities could be implemented with extrabudgetary funds. The WGA Alternate Focal Point of Oman was nominated as the new WGA Chairperson, while the WGA Focal Point of Bahrain was nominated as the new WGA Vice-Chairperson. -

The WGA reviewed the recommendations and decisions of the Commission made at its fourth session (Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 7–9 May 2007) and noted that all planned and endorsed WGA activities had been duly implemented. The meeting extensively discussed the fin al activities and inputs to the Regional Aquaculture Information System (RAIS) in view of its imminent and official launching in March 2009. The participants discussed and agreed on the i) RAIS User Manual, ii) promotional flyer, iii) press release, and iv) on the overall communication strategy to launch and to further strengthen the information system. The WGA noted with regret that the start of the “Aquaculture legal and policy framework project” during the intersessional period was not possib le as the agreed financial input from all the contributing Commission members had not been received. The WGA finalized its proposed programme of work for the new intersessional period based on the needs and recommendations resulting from the implementation of activities in the last biennium and emerging issues of importance for the region. The WGA recognized that the Commission, based on its current level of financial contribution, may not have the required budget to implement a comprehensive aq uaculture programme and recommended that some activities could be implemented with extrabudgetary funds. The six main activities proposed in order of priority for the new work plan include: 1) application of risk analysis to aquaculture, 2) environmental monitoring in cage aquaculture, 3) impacts of red tides to aquaculture, 4) development of national strategies on aquatic animal health, 5) spatial tools and aquaculture zoning, and 6) aquaculture recirculation strategies. The WGA recommended tha t the Commission should also encourage and support more training and on-the-job cooperation in the field of aquaculture development among its members as well as in countries outside the region.
