Book (stand-alone)Technical studyIndependent study to identify different options in support of an improved functioning of the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF)/ Étude indépendante visant à identifier les différentes options à l'appui d'un meilleur fonctionnement du Comité des pêches pour l’Atlantique Centre-Est (COPACE) 2020
Also available in:
No results found. This document is an independent study to identify different options in support of an improved functioning of the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF) including a cost-benefit analysis (CBA). Its focus is on the financial and capacity-building dimensions, since all indications are that CECAF is performing irreplaceable regional fisheries research application and fisheries management functions. However, it is doing this with limited capacity and finance. -

DocumentOther documentWinDASI: A Software for Cost-Benefit Analysis of Investment Projects. Installation Note 2005
Also available in:
No results found. This module contains the WinDASI software and a note that illustrates how to carry out the installation of WinDASI on your personal computer. WinDASI is a software for Cost-benefit Analysis (CBA) of investment projects that allows the analysis of the financial and economic viability of investments. In particular, it facilitates the systematic storage of data for Cost-Benefit Analysis and allows to calculate: a) flows of physical quantities of outputs, inputs and investment items; b) flows of cur rent, discounted and cumulative costs, benefits, and net benefits; c) flows of incremental (With-Without project) current, discounted and cumulative net benefits; and e) indicators of financial and economic viability such as the Net Present Value (NPV), the Internal Rate of Return (IRR), the Benefit/Cost Ratio, (BCR), the Switching Values (SVs) and Sensitivity tests. Instructions are provided on how to carry out calculations for the different components of an investment project, notably: plans, zones and projects (i.e. at different levels of aggregation). In addition, the software can deal with comparisons of different projects and alternative scenarios (e.g. with–project versus without-project), and normal and phased modes of calculation.

Book (series)FlagshipThe State of Food and Agriculture 2019
Moving forward on food loss and waste reduction
2019The need to reduce food loss and waste is firmly embedded in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Food loss and waste reduction is considered important for improving food security and nutrition, promoting environmental sustainability and lowering production costs. However, efforts to reduce food loss and waste will only be effective if informed by a solid understanding of the problem. This report provides new estimates of the percentage of the world’s food lost from production up to the retail level. The report also finds a vast diversity in existing estimates of losses, even for the same commodities and for the same stages in the supply chain. Clearly identifying and understanding critical loss points in specific supply chains – where considerable potential exists for reducing food losses – is crucial to deciding on appropriate measures. The report provides some guiding principles for interventions based on the objectives being pursued through food loss and waste reductions, be they in improved economic efficiency, food security and nutrition, or environmental sustainability. -
Book (stand-alone)High-profileRinderpest and its eradication 2022
Also available in:
No results found. This book tells the story of rinderpest and its eradication. The focus is on the international coordination that came together after the Second World War in the confident belief that, with vaccines available, the eradication of rinderpest was a practical possibility. In both Africa and South Asia, beginning in the 1960s, there was an initial dramatic success through the coordinated vaccination of cattle across the continents. Unfortunately, follow-up measures could not prevent the return of epidemic rinderpest, albeit to a lesser extent. Chastened by failure, the international community refocused with renewed energy to achieve eradication. The vaccination programmes broadened to reflect a multidisciplinary approach to disease eradication. FAO and the OIE, together with international aid agencies, coordinated policy with the nation states and guided implementation of the era¬dication programmes until success was achieved. -
