A guide to import verification for national plant protection organizations

This manual addresses import verification as an aspect of the broader subject of import regulation. It draws extensively on requirements specified in several International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs) and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). It sets the stage or basis for import verification and provides guidance to national plant protection organizations (NPPOs) on the operation of an import verification system, the process of import verification, requirements for import verification and pathways that should be considered.

Report of the FAO Workshop on Risk-based Fish Rejection at Borders. Rome, 30 October to 1 November 2019 2020

The FAO workshop on risk-based fish inspection at borders was held to understand the key food safety standard compliance challenges when exporting fishery and aquaculture products; in doing so, it sought to guide future FAO work in the area of trade facilitation. Available data from some of the main importing countries was presented during the event and the differences between the rejection profiles analysed. Participating countries presented their food safety regulation frameworks, which provide the basis – as well as the authority – to operate a food import control system designed to protect consumers and facilitate fair practices in food trade. Participants explained how their respective import food control systems provided the level of protection deemed appropriate by the country, establishing safety measures that protected human life or health within a country’s territory. Participants recommended the application of risk-based imported fish controls and provided a set of recommendations to improve the reporting of import rejections, as well as recommendations to improve data analysis.

The State of Food Insecurity in the World (SOFI) 2014
Strengthening the enabling environment for food security and nutrition
    2014
The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2014 presents updated estimates of undernourishment and progress towards the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) and World Food Summit (WFS) hunger targets. A stock-taking of where we stand on reducing hunger and malnutrition shows that progress in hunger reduction at the global level and in many countries has continued but that substantial additional effort is needed in others. The 2014 report also presents further insights into the suite of food security indicators introduced in 2013 and analyses in greater depth the dimensions of food security – availability, access, stability and utilization. By measuring food security across these dimensions, the suite of indicators can provide a detailed picture of the food security and nutrition challenges in a country, thus assisting in the design of targeted food security and nutrition interventions. Sustained political commitment at the highest level is a prerequisite for hunger eradication. It entails placing food security and nutrition at the top of the political agenda and creating an enabling environment for improving food security and nutrition. This year’s report examines the diverse experiences of seven countries, with a specific focus on the enabling environment for food security and nutrition that reflects commitment and capacities across four dimensions: policies, programmes and legal frameworks; mobilization of human and financial resources; coordination mechanisms and partnerships; and evidence-based decision-making.
