The report on the appraisal of the Lampung Giant Fresh Water Shrimp Project is undertaken on the basis of Contract No. DP/INS/72/064-2/FI with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Its aim is the assessment of the various implications of the Lampung Giant Fresh Water Shrimp Project. The project under study has a dual objective since its aim is not only the technical development of Giant Fresh Water Shrimp Culture but its feasibility within the framework of the pres ent transmigration program. The study is thus directed to explore the requirements and possibilities of Giant Fresh Water Shrimp Culture as a non-paddy-field alternative engagement for transmigrants. Within such a framework, the appraisal is thus directed not only at the technical and financial aspects of the project but more importantly the design of the organization to accommodate and the specification of marketing efforts to sustain the undertaking. The presents study reflects the coopera tive effort between the Directorate General of Fisheries and the Management Institute of the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia, both in data gathering as well as analysis.

The report briefly reviews the fishery resources situation in waters off' Kenya and the main commercial marine fisheries activities in the country. The production of fish and the planned development are also discussed. The report recommends that a project for development of prawn fishery be implemented. Its purpose would be to investigate on a semi-commercial basis the possibilities of deep-water shrimp trawling with an ultimate objective of setting up a sizable commercial operation. The report discusses the possibilities of tuna long-lining which because of serious technical difficulties could be conceived initially as a training operation on the basis of which a decision could be made at a later stage as to whether this type of fishery should be developed or not. The report also suggests that a test fishing operation for demersal and pelagic trawling be carried out to assess the possibilities of exploiting both the demersal and the pelagic of the North Kenya Banks.
