This report is an output of the project "Enhancing Climate Change Resilience in the Small Pelagic Fisheries of the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem", which falls within the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Benguela Current Convention (BCC) project on "Enhancing Climate Change Resilience in the Benguela Current Fisheries System". The aim of the project is to "build resilience and reduce the vulnerability to climate change of the marine fisheries and mariculture sectors within the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystems through strengthening adaptive capacity and implementing participatory and integrated strategies in order to ensure food and livelihood security". The project was funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the governments of Angola, Namibia and South Africa and FAO. FAO is the agency responsible for the supervision and provision of technical guidance during the implementation of the project and the BCC was assigned as the executing agency.

The EAF-Nansen Programme in collaboration with the Benguela Current Convention (BCC) hosted a workshop to share learning among fisheries managers and scientists about the management of fishing activity that affects fish stocks shared by Angola, Namibia and South Africa in the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem. This report presents lessons and key challenges from the participants’ assessment of the history of shared stock management in the region and the network of fisheries actors influencing this management. It then synthesizes visions of shared stock management in 2035 proposed by the participants. Based on the workshop outcomes, the EAF-Nansen Programme is working with the BCC and national agencies to identify and advance priority actions towards the visions in the region.

Terminal evaluation of the project "Strengthening the adaptive capacity to climate change in the fisheries and aquaculture sector of Chile

The project “Strengthening the adaptive capacity to climate change in the fisheries and aquaculture sector of Chile”, with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), sought to reduce the vulnerability and increase the adaptive capacity to climate change in the fisheries and aquaculture sector of Chile. Implemented in four remote coves, the project was geared towards coastal communities through high quality in-person participatory capacity building sessions, raising awareness about topics such as productive diversification, adaptation to climate change, aquaculture and tourism. Despite there being several changes in civil servants and government authorities, as well as certain delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and civil unrest in the country, the project managed to progress towards the formulated objective, was relevant to the actual situation and suited to the needs of the beneficiaries. Lessons learned were also generated to improve the formulation and management of this type of project in the future. Notably, the evaluation found that climate change adaptation workshops have a high potential for replicability across different geographic settings in the region.
