Technical Assistance for Strengthening Fisheries Research, Development and Management Capabilities - TCP/ERI/3803 2024

Fisheries development in Eritrea faces many challenges. For example, the waters of the southern part of the Red Sea are highly productive and rich in biodiversity, but systematic stock assessments of important species are not routinely conducted by the Ministry of Marine Resources (MMR). As a result, the size of Eritrea's fisheries resources is unknown, and without knowledge of the extent of the resource, sustainable management is difficult. The MMR needs to develop its capacity in areas such as fish stock assessment (both marine and inland), fish processing, aquaculture, small boat manufacturing and fisheries governance. The main objective of the project was to build capacity within the MMR to collect, analyze and use data for better resource management. Improving technical capacity was also essential for the successful implementation of the Fisheries Resource Management Program (FReMP) and for building a solid knowledge base for the future.

Developing Capacity for Implementing the Cook Islands Census of Agriculture and Fisheries 2021 - TCP/CKI/3801 2024

Cook Islands, a country comprising 15 islands, is spread over two million square kilometres of the South Pacific Ocean. Its population in March 2020 was estimated at 17 600, with about four times this number residing in New Zealand. Cook Islanders are also New Zealand citizens, resulting in a considerable movement of people between the two countries. The agriculture and fisheries sector contributes only 2.4 percent to the gross domestic product. However, community-based agriculture and fisheries remain an important part of the traditional economy, especially in the outer islands. Agriculture provides a livelihood for many people and is important for food production and food security. Over two-thirds of households are engaged in some form of agriculture, usually for subsistence purposes, and nearly 40 percent are engaged in fishing. Agriculture and fisheries remain at the forefront of the government’s economic growth strategy, which is focused on increasing agricultural production to improve food security and nutrition, within the framework of sustainable natural resources management and an improved quality of life. Specifically, the government aims to improve agricultural practices, develop the livestock sector, train farmers, improve access to credit, create market opportunities and develop support mechanisms for farmers

Feasibility Studies for GCF Saint Lucia Proposal in Support of the Fisheries Sectoral Adaptation Strategy Action Plan (SASAP) - TCP/STL/3802 2025

Saint Lucia is highly vulnerable to climate change due to its small geographical size, high-risk location in terms of volcanic and seismic activity, tropical cyclones, oceanic forces, and economic dependence on agriculture and tourism. The impact of climate change on the country‘s marine and coastal ecosystems includes: (i) increased intensity of tropical storms, posing risks to fisherfolk; (ii) a projected decline of over 40 percent in fish catch-potential in tropical oceans by mid-century; (iii) negative effects on coastal ecosystems and aquaculture due to rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification and marine heatwaves; (iv) damage to fisheries infrastructure from rising sea levels and storm surges.
